Sonos vs Control4 for multi-room audio
The comparison everyone makes, between two things that are not actually competing.

Control4 is the control system running on a controller in your house; Sonos is one of the sources it routes. That last part is the whole decision, because the cabling is the only piece you cannot buy cheaply later. I get asked this question in almost exactly these words, usually by someone standing in a framed house with a builder deadline, and the framing of it is the problem: choosing between them is like choosing between a light switch and a lightbulb. What follows is the version I give in the field — what each layer does, where the six-zone ceiling comes from, what a new build settles for you exactly once, and what actually drives the cost of each.
They are not the same layer
Sonos is a source and amplification layer. A Sonos Amp takes streaming services and a couple of wired inputs and drives a pair of speakers. Every zone is a self-contained unit with its own amplifier, and every zone is on the network. That design is why it is so easy to start with, and it is also the whole explanation for everything that gets hard about it later.
Control4 is a control layer. It runs on a controller inside the house rather than in a data center, carries 6,000+ certified drivers, and its job is to make one interface reach lighting, shades, climate, security, video and audio at once. It is not an audio product. It is the thing that makes a keypad by the front door do something sensible, and it treats Sonos the way it treats a cable box or a theater processor — as a source with a driver.
And in the middle there is a third thing nobody asks about, which is the one that actually matters: distributed amplification. A matrix amplifier — Crestron Sonnex, Control4 Triad, NAD CI 980 — sits between your sources and your zones and routes any source to any zone with independent volume, EQ and source per zone. It is what a whole-house audio system actually is. Sonos can feed it. Control4 can control it. Neither one is it.
Where the six-zone ceiling comes from
Sonos alone tops out at around six zones before it gets expensive and tangled. That number is not a specification, it is what happens when every zone carries its own amplifier. Zone eleven costs the same as zone one, forever, because you are buying an amp with every pair of speakers. Meanwhile a matrix amplifier buys channels in blocks, so the marginal zone gets cheaper right up until you cross a block boundary — which is why the sensible planning move is to decide the final zone count during design even if some zones get activated later.
The second reason for the ceiling is the network. Every Sonos zone is a device that has to stay reachable, and a large house with a dozen of them is asking a residential Wi-Fi network to do something it was not sized for. That is why the single most common Sonos complaint — rooms dropping out of a group, grouping that fails halfway — is a network fault rather than a speaker fault, and it is why we start those service calls with a coverage map instead of a box of replacement players. Below the ceiling, Sonos is genuinely the right answer and I say so on site. A Sonos Amp driving two to four in-ceiling speakers in a smaller house is a complete system, it costs less than the alternative, the app is one everybody in the family already understands, and there is nothing clever we would add to it that would be worth charging you for.
What a new build lets you settle exactly once
This is the part that makes the new-build version of the question different from the retrofit version, and it is the reason I push back when a builder wants to defer the AV conversation until after drywall.
Almost everything in this category can be bought in any year. Amplifiers, controllers, speakers, apps, streaming subscriptions — all of it is replaceable in an afternoon a decade from now, and all of it will be better then. Cable is the exception. A 12-16 zone system installed in a finished house takes 8-14 days on site and most of that is patching labor rather than equipment, while the same system roughed in during framing rides along with the other trades across 3-5 weeks of GC phases and costs a fraction of the disruption. An 8-zone retrofit is 3-5 days on site. The gear is the same either way.
So the new-build list is short, and none of it is a brand decision:
- Speaker cable to every zone you might ever want, including the two you are not sure about. The wire is the cheapest item on the project and the only one that is expensive to add.
- A real equipment closet — ventilated, powered, central, with structured cable landing in it. Not a coat cupboard chosen after the fact.
- Structured cable to every access-point location, at one access point per roughly 2,500 sq ft. A wired backbone is the single biggest improvement most struggling audio systems can get, and it costs almost nothing at framing.
- Back-boxes and blocking where speakers and panels are going, coordinated with the framer rather than negotiated with a drywaller later.
- Conduit on the runs that will change — to the theater, to the primary television wall, to the rack. Twenty minutes of foresight buys a re-pull instead of a wall repair.
Do those five things and you have kept every option open: Sonos-only today, matrix amplification in year three, a control system in year five, all without opening a wall. Five questions that settle it for your house
When someone genuinely does have to choose — a remodel with a fixed budget, or a build where the control layer is being deferred — these five answers decide it faster than any feature comparison.
1. How many zones, honestly, at the end? Not today — at the end. Count the rooms you would be annoyed to walk into and find silent, then add the outdoor areas. Under six, Sonos. Eight and up, distributed. Between the two, it is a budget conversation rather than an engineering one.
2. Is audio the only subsystem, or one of five? If lighting, shades, climate, security and video are also on the list, the control layer stops being optional, because the alternative is five apps and a family that uses two of them. If audio is genuinely the only thing, a control system is a solution to a problem you do not have yet.
3. Do you want keypads, or is a phone enough? This one is more revealing than it sounds. Phones are personal; keypads are architectural. A house where guests, kids and cleaners all need to turn music on wants buttons on walls, and buttons on walls means a control system.
4. How much should stop working when the internet does? A local controller keeps scenes, keypads and schedules alive through an outage; the streaming service is the part that stops either way. Some households genuinely do not care. The ones with a home office usually do.
5. Who is going to own this in year eight? With Control4, the project file is handed over and any authorized dealer can pick it up — the house is not locked to whoever installed it. That is worth asking about directly, in writing, of anyone bidding your project, whatever platform they are proposing.
What drives the cost of each
Multi-room audio prices by zone count more than by square footage. A Sonos-only system under the six-zone ceiling is the least expensive way into whole-home sound. Cross into distributed audio and the number moves with zone count, speaker tier, and how many rooms get independent EQ and source. Control4 is a separate line on the same project, because it is controlling more than the audio — across its tiers and home sizes it spans a wide range, and the audio subsystem is one of several things inside that number. Which is exactly the point of the layer distinction: you are not paying for Control4 instead of Sonos, you are paying for a control layer that also happens to make the Sonos you already own behave like part of the house. Every project gets one fixed number after a site walk — not a range by email.
A useful sanity check on any bid: ask what share of it is cable and labor versus boxes. In new construction the answer should be substantial, and a bid where it is not is usually a bid that plans to hang equipment on a house that was not prepared for it.
The two mistakes we get called about
The fourteen-zone Sonos house. It grew a zone at a time, nobody ever made a decision, and now there are fourteen amplifiers on a residential network, a group that drops the kitchen every evening, and a family that has stopped using half of it. The fix is rarely to throw it away — the players become the source layer, we correct the network underneath, and a matrix amplifier and in-ceiling speakers get added around them. But it costs more than doing it in order would have, and the wire is the expensive part.
The control system on a bad network. The other direction, and worse, because the bill was bigger. A beautiful control layer sitting on consumer mesh gear with no wired backbone produces a house that is intermittently broken in a more expensive way. Network first, always — it is the foundation both of these platforms stand on, and it is the cheapest of the three to get right.
So: which should you put in?
In a new build with eight or more zones: run the wire, put in matrix amplification, and let Sonos be the streaming layer on top of it. Add the control system now if lighting, shades and video are also in scope, or leave the door open for it if they are not. In a new build under six zones: Sonos Amps and in-ceiling speakers, plus every one of the five rough-in items above, so the house is ready if you change your mind. And in either case, build the network like it is load-bearing, because it is.

In a new build, usually both, because they are not competitors — they sit at different layers. Can Sonos and Control4 work together, or is it one or the other?
Together, and that is the normal shape of the work rather than a compromise. Sonos appears in the Control4 driver library, so it shows up as a named source alongside the TV audio, the theater and the outdoor zones — a keypad by the door, a touch panel or one app selects it, and nobody in the household has to remember which app plays what. On the Crestron side the common arrangement is Crestron Home at the control layer, Lutron HomeWorks underneath for lighting and shades, and Sonos or a matrix amplifier providing amplification. The mistake is treating them as alternatives and then buying the wrong one twice.
How many Sonos zones is too many before I need a distributed system?
Sonos alone tops out at around six zones before it gets expensive and tangled; distributed audio is the right architecture from eight up. The real dividing line is not the count though, it is the behavior you want. A distributed system puts a matrix amplifier — Crestron Sonnex, Control4 Triad, NAD CI 980 — between the sources and the zones, so every room gets independent volume, EQ and source. That is what lets a kid’s playlist run in a bedroom, different music play in the kitchen, a third source sit on the patio and the game audio fill the great room, all at once. What does multi-room audio cost in Kansas City?
It comes down to three things: how many zones the house actually needs, whether a matrix amplifier and distributed wiring are part of the scope or it stays a Sonos-only system, and whether Control4 is also controlling lighting, shades, climate and security on the same project. Control4 as a whole-home control platform is a separate line from the audio itself, because the audio is one of several subsystems it controls. If I only put in Sonos now, can I add Control4 later?
Yes, and it is a reasonable phased plan as long as one thing happens now: the wire. Adding a control system later is a purchase and a programming engagement. Adding cable to a finished house is drywall work, and a 12-16 zone retrofit runs 8-14 days on site with most of that being patching rather than gear, against a new-construction rough-in that rides along with the other trades over 3-5 weeks of GC phases. So the phased version we recommend is: pull speaker cable and structured cable to every zone and every access-point location at framing, land it in a real equipment closet, put in whatever amplification the budget supports today, and let the control layer arrive when it makes sense. Nobody has ever regretted the extra cable.
Does Control4 stop working when the internet goes down?
The control layer does not — that is one of the substantive differences between a local control system and a cloud-dependent one. Control4 runs on a controller inside the house, so keypads, scenes and schedules keep working when the connection drops. What stops is anything that was genuinely coming from the internet: a streaming service has nothing to stream. That distinction is worth thinking about when you are deciding how much of a house should depend on any one account, and it is a large part of why we run a local controller as the spine and treat streaming sources as inputs to it.
Why does my Sonos keep dropping rooms, and would Control4 fix it?
No, and this is the most expensive misdiagnosis in the category. Dropped rooms and grouping that fails halfway are almost always the network: weak or overlapping Wi-Fi coverage, devices clinging to the wrong access point, consumer mesh gear handling multi-room audio traffic badly, or segmentation that quietly puts the players and your phone on different lanes. Adding a control system on top of a bad network gives you the same faults with a nicer interface. Our residential standard is one access point per roughly 2,500 sq ft on Ubiquiti UniFi Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, structured cabling to every access-point location, and four VLANs — Main, IoT, Guest, Cameras — with the rules written deliberately. Fix that first, whatever you decide about brands.
