Why half a keypad bank goes dark

Lutron HomeWorks is not a drawer of smart switches that happen to share an app. It is a wired processor sitting in the equipment closet, dedicated lighting circuits in the panel, and keypads wired back to that processor. That architecture is the reason a partial outage is useful information rather than a mystery: when one contiguous group of keypads stops responding together and the rest of the house is untouched, the fault is almost always on something that group shares — not on each keypad independently deciding to fail on the same Tuesday.

So the first thing we do is narrow the blast radius, and the order matters:

• Scope it precisely. Which keypads, which loads, which rooms — and does anything in the group still work? A bank that is fully dead and a bank that is dead on four buttons out of six are different faults.
• Ask whether the loads still move. If those lights still respond from the app or from a keypad elsewhere in the house, the dimming side is healthy and the problem lives on the keypad and processor side. That single test cuts the search in half before anyone opens a panel.
• Check the processor. Is it online, is the project file fully loaded, and did a firmware update or a power event leave it in a half-committed state? A processor that came back up holding an incomplete load will run most of a house correctly and drop a segment.
• Then the shared run. Keypads are wired back to the processor in runs. A whole bank failing at once is the signature of the thing they have in common.
• The individual keypad last. A Pico keypad in a busy kitchen gets pressed thirty-plus times a day, which is a large number of actuations over ten years, and well inside what the hardware is built for. One failing is uncommon; six failing simultaneously is not the story.
• And the panel side. Dedicated lighting circuits mean a breaker or a dimming module can take out exactly the loads it feeds and nothing else — which reads to the owner as “half the keypads are broken.”

What it is essentially never: bulbs. HomeWorks controls the circuit, so a lamp problem takes out one fixture. If a whole room went quiet at once, stop buying bulbs.

Shades that stopped moving

Lutron Sivoia QS Roman and roller shades — with Palladiom rollers in the premium rooms — run on the same HomeWorks system as the lighting. That is a design advantage most of the time and a diagnostic wrinkle when something goes wrong, because a shade that will not move is three different questions wearing one coat: is the hardware failing, is the command not arriving, or is the shade doing precisely what it was told?

The third one catches more Kansas City houses than owners expect. Sivoia shades on HomeWorks are typically commissioned against an astronomical clock — closing at dusk, holding a sun-tracking position through a hot west-facing afternoon — and sometimes against geofencing that opens the house when you get home. A shade parked at 40% in July is often a shade obediently executing a rule somebody wrote during commissioning and nobody has looked at since. We check the schedule before we check the drive, because the schedule is free to fix.

Legacy Sivoia QED shades have a way forward. Lutron has been owned by the same family since 1961 and still manufactures in Pennsylvania, and one consequence of that is it does not strand its old lines: legacy Sivoia QED shades from the 2000s still have a factory upgrade path onto the current Sivoia QS drives. For a mid-2000s Leawood or Mission Hills house this is the difference between a drive upgrade and re-treating every opening in the home — the brackets, the pockets, and usually the fabric stay where they are. If a quote landed on your desk that assumes full replacement, ask about the upgrade path first. It is a real service offering, not a courtesy.

Scene drift, re-engraving, and reprogramming

“My scenes reset every night” is the most common Lutron complaint that is not a hardware complaint at all. Scenes live in the processor, not in the wall, so anything that appears to undo your adjustments is the processor asserting something it was told to assert. Four causes account for nearly all of it: a timeclock or astronomical-clock event still firing from the original commissioning; a level nudged at the keypad but never stored back into the scene, so the next scheduled event restores the saved value; a project file reloaded from an older revision, quietly reverting years of hand-tuning; or a Control4 or Crestron layer above HomeWorks running its own schedule on top of Lutron’s. None of those need new hardware. All of them need somebody with the project file open.

The same visit is when engraving gets fixed. Lutron keypads are engraved because they are meant to be read at a glance and pressed dozens of times a day, and a badly grouped, badly labelled keypad is how an expensive lighting system turns into an expensive argument at the front door. Houses change — a nursery becomes an office, a basement becomes a media room — and when they do, the button text and the scene behind it should change together. We re-engrave and re-cut the scenes as one job. If the system also carries Ketra fixtures, the same pass is where circadian programming gets re-tuned across the 1400K–10000K range, down to the 0.1% dimming floor those fixtures can actually hold.

When the dealer of record is gone

Plenty of Kansas City Lutron systems outlive the company that installed them. Lutron grades its dealers — Basic, Specialist, Certified, Diamond — and Certified Installers complete advanced training in HomeWorks programming, commissioning, and Ketra spectrum design every year. The reason that credentialing matters to you is portability: a homeowner moving from one Certified Installer to another can pick up the project file and keep going. The house is not locked to one technician who has stopped answering the phone.

How we take one on: an on-site audit that maps what is genuinely installed rather than what the old drawings claim — processors, panels, keypad locations, shade drives, and whatever Control4, Crestron, or Savant layer is sitting on top — then recovery or reconstruction of the current project file, then ongoing coverage. From that point the system is documented and serviceable again, which is the whole point.
