Cost guide

How much does a home theater cost in Kansas City? (2026)

The cost of a home theater in Kansas City is decided by three things: room type (media room, dedicated theater conversion or reference build), equipment grade (mainstream vs reference loudspeakers and projector), and the level of acoustic treatment. IntegrateIT is a CEDIA member designing and installing theaters across the Kansas City metro from Overland Park. We give one fixed number in writing after a no-cost site walk.

Below: what each theater type includes, the difference between a media room and a dedicated theater, and the six questions every Kansas City buyer asks.

The three theater types (Kansas City, 2026)

Media Room — TV-based

Large 4K or 8K TV (85"-100"), 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos in-wall + in-ceiling speakers, AV receiver, smart lighting integration, comfortable seating. Built into the family room or great room — not acoustically isolated. Right-sized for the family that wants the experience without a dedicated room.

Dedicated Theater — Conversion

Convert a basement room or bonus room into a dedicated theater. Acoustic treatment on walls + ceiling, motorized screen + 4K laser projector, 7.4.4 or 9.4.4 Dolby Atmos with concealed gear, theater lighting + sconces, 6-10 seat row. Right-sized for a basement or bonus room that can become its own world.

Reference Theater — Bespoke

No-compromise dedicated theater. Reference calibration, dual subwoofers, custom millwork acoustic treatment, motorized starlight ceiling, Wisdom Audio LS3 or Steinway Lyngdorf reference loudspeakers, Sony VPL or Barco projector, custom seating (Cinematech, Elite HTS). Multi-month design and commissioning. Right-sized for the owner who wants the room to be the best in the house.

Every number we give is fixed and in writing, and it comes after a no-cost site walk.

Questions every Kansas City buyer asks

How much does a home theater cost in Kansas City?

It depends on the room, the projection or display tier, and the acoustic work. A media room built into a great room, a dedicated basement conversion and a reference room are three different projects. A no-cost site walk produces a fixed price.

What's the difference between a media room and a dedicated home theater?

A media room is in your living room or family room — usually a large TV (not a projector), in-wall speakers, comfortable seating. A dedicated theater is its own room with acoustic isolation, a projector + motorized screen, theater-grade speakers concealed behind acoustic-transparent panels, dimmed theater lighting. The dedicated theater experience is on a different planet; the cost reflects it.

How long does a home theater install take in Kansas City?

Media rooms: 2-4 weeks. Dedicated theater conversion: 6-10 weeks (most of that is the room build — drywall, acoustic treatment, electrical). Reference-grade custom theaters: 4-7 months end-to-end (design + room build + equipment install + 1-2 weeks of calibration).

Do I need Control4 or Crestron to run my home theater?

For a media-room install — no, a quality AV receiver + your phone for control is enough. For a dedicated theater — yes, the lighting + screen + projector + audio coordination is what makes "Movie" scene press-a-button magic, and that requires Control4 or Crestron. For reference-grade — yes, Crestron typically, with custom programming.

Should I buy a 4K or 8K projector in 2026?

4K is still the practical sweet spot in 2026. 8K content is sparse (Netflix + Amazon stream at 4K, Blu-ray tops out at 4K). 8K projectors cost far more for marginal real-world benefit at typical home-theater screen sizes. Save the 8K premium for the speakers and the acoustic treatment.
