Best smart home access points: UniFi, Araknis, Ruckus
Written by a dealer for exactly one of the three, which is the first thing you should know.

All three are competent platforms, and on a house the brand is roughly the fifth most important decision anyone makes about the wireless network. The four decisions ahead of it — whether every access point is fed by its own cable, how many there are and where they sit, whether the switch can power them, and whether anybody tuned the result — decide whether the Wi-Fi is good. The precondition nobody wants to hear
Before any of the three: every access point gets its own cable. Not a shared run, not a wireless uplink to a neighboring unit, not a powerline adapter. A cable, back to a switch, delivering both data and power.
The reason is not brand loyalty, it is arithmetic. An access point relaying traffic wirelessly to another access point spends radio time twice — receiving from the client and re-transmitting toward the network — so the usable throughput at that node falls hard, and it falls hardest exactly when the network is busy. Two hops compound it. This is why a house full of expensive access points can measure beautifully at the router and feel terrible in the far bedroom, and it is worked through in detail in mesh Wi-Fi versus hardwired access points.
If the walls are open — a new build, an addition, a gut renovation — this is free relative to the rest of the project and there is no argument to have. If they are not, the honest sequence is: find the cable paths that exist, wire what you can, and treat wireless backhaul as the compromise it is rather than as the design.
The three platforms, honestly

The whole stack lives in one interface, which matters more in a house than any single radio specification, because a homeowner who can see their own network is a homeowner who calls less. Licensing is predictable — the features we rely on are not gated behind an annual renewal per access point. The current generation covers Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, and the outdoor and in-wall form factors mean a pool house or a bank of bedrooms gets the right shape of radio rather than a compromise.
What to watch for: It is a platform that rewards being designed rather than assembled. Mixed generations of hardware, undersized PoE budgets and default settings left untouched will produce a mediocre network on any brand, and UniFi is easy enough to buy that it gets assembled by people who skip the design. The controller also wants to be reachable and current — a network that nobody has logged into for three years is running three-year-old firmware.
Araknis

Snap One’s house network brand, sold through the same dealer channel as Control4 and managed remotely through Snap One’s OvrC platform.
The argument for it is workflow rather than radio physics: for a dealer already living in the Snap One ecosystem, the network gear shows up in the same remote-management tool as everything else, which shortens the distance between a homeowner reporting a problem and somebody seeing it. On a Control4 house that single-pane-of-glass argument is real and worth taking seriously.
What to watch for: It is a dealer-channel product, which cuts both ways. You are choosing an integrator relationship as much as a hardware platform, and replacing a failed unit generally means the dealer, not a same-day purchase. If your integrator changes, ask early what happens to the remote-management side.
Ruckus

An enterprise and hospitality wireless line, now part of CommScope, best known for adaptive antenna technology that steers the signal toward the client.
Genuinely excellent in hard radio environments and at high client density — the kind of place where hundreds of devices contend in a small space, or where the building is doing everything it can to absorb a signal. If your house is unusually hostile to radio, or you are covering a venue-like space, this is a technology worth knowing exists.
What to watch for: The licensing, support and management model is built for commercial operators, and the cost of that model does not amortise well across four or six access points in a family home. For most residences it is a well-engineered answer to a question the house is not asking.
What a Control4 house actually asks of the network
Control4 processes locally on the controller, which is the single most useful fact for this decision: the house keeps working when the internet does not, so the network’s job is reliability between devices inside the home rather than raw internet throughput. Three things follow from that.
Wire the fixed things. The controller, the in-wall touchscreens, the amplifiers, the video distribution and the recorder are furniture. They belong on copper. Every one of them you leave on Wi-Fi is a device competing for airtime with the phones and laptops that have no alternative.
Get multicast and discovery right. Control apps, streaming endpoints and speakers find each other with multicast and mDNS, and both of those interact badly with careless segmentation. Put the automation system on a VLAN without deliberately allowing discovery to cross where it needs to, and you get the classic symptom set: everything plays, nothing appears in the list. On a managed switch this is a handful of settings — IGMP snooping configured rather than defaulted, discovery relayed where the design calls for it — but they are settings somebody has to make on purpose.
Segment, then write the rules. Our residential baseline is four VLANs — main, IoT, guest and cameras — with the IoT segment blocked from initiating connections into main, guest captive-portal isolated, and cameras given no internet egress. The point of segmentation is the rules; without them it is just labelling.
Density, PoE, and roaming — the three that get skipped
Density. Roughly one access point per 2,500 square feet is the starting point, corrected by the building. In Kansas City that correction is usually upward and usually for the same reasons: plaster with wire lath in the older Mission Hills and Brookside houses, brick and stone, foil-faced insulation, and walkout lower levels that are effectively a separate building from a radio’s point of view. Because 6 GHz does not travel as far as 5 GHz, using the new band properly means more radios at lower power.
PoE budget. Modern access points want PoE+ at minimum, and higher-tier Wi-Fi 7 units may want PoE++ to bring everything up at full capability. The constraint is the switch: a 24-port PoE switch does not power 24 hungry devices, and cameras, door readers and intercoms are drawing from the same budget. Size the budget during design, not when the last camera refuses to boot.
Roaming. A phone carried from the kitchen to the patio should hand off without the call dropping. The standards that make that graceful — neighbor reports, transition management, fast roaming — are supported broadly, but they need to be enabled and the radios need to be tuned so that clients are encouraged to move rather than clinging to a distant access point at one bar. Under-tuned roaming is the most common reason a well-specified network still feels bad.
How to choose, in four questions
- Can every access point be wired? If yes, the platform choice is a preference. If no, fix that first — it outranks every other decision on this page.
- Who maintains it in year four? Firmware, certificates, a failed unit at 9pm. The answer to this question is usually the answer to the brand question, because the right platform is the one your integrator genuinely supports.
- Is this a house or a venue? Hundreds of contending clients, or a building that is genuinely hostile to radio, is where enterprise-class gear earns its licensing model. A large family home is generally not that.
- What happens if you change integrators? Ask, before you buy, what you own and what you can be locked out of. This is a fair question on any platform and a good integrator will answer it without flinching.
For what it costs: the number depends on home size, how many access points the building needs, cable-run count, switch and PoE tier, and whether the walls are already open. Ubiquiti UniFi vs Araknis vs Ruckus for a Control4 home — what do integrators in Kansas City actually install?

The reasons we land on UniFi are practical rather than ideological: one console covers the gateway, switching, access points and cameras; there is no per-access-point license to renew; and replacement hardware is available quickly. Araknis is Snap One’s house brand and travels with the Control4 dealer channel through the OvrC remote-management platform, which is a legitimate workflow argument on a Control4 house. Ruckus is an enterprise and hospitality line that does very well in dense or radio-hostile environments and is generally more platform than a residence needs. The brand matters less than the three things underneath it: wired backhaul, enough access points, and a network somebody actually designed.
Does the access point brand matter for a Control4 system specifically?
Less than people expect, and not for the reason they expect. Control4 does its processing locally on the controller, so the house does not stop working when the internet does — which means the network’s job is device-to-device reliability inside the home rather than raw internet speed. What actually matters for Control4 is that the controller, the touchscreens and the amplifiers are wired rather than wireless; that the network handles multicast and mDNS correctly so streaming devices and control apps can discover each other; and that if the system is segmented across VLANs, the discovery traffic is deliberately allowed to cross where it needs to. All three of those are configuration decisions, and any of the three platforms can be configured right or wrong.
What actually decides whether the Wi-Fi is good?
In order: whether every access point is fed by its own cable, how many access points there are and where they sit, whether the switch can actually power them, and whether anyone tuned the radios afterwards. Brand is fifth. A wired three-access-point UniFi design in the right ceilings will beat an unwired six-access-point deployment of anything, and a saturated network is the most common root cause behind complaints that get blamed on the automation system.
How many access points does a house need, and where do they go?
Start at roughly one per 2,500 square feet, then let the building correct it. Ceilings, not walls, are the right mounting position in almost every case. Plaster with wire lath, brick, foil-faced insulation, stone fireplaces, radiant floor systems and large steel appliances all attenuate, and a walkout lower level often needs its own radio regardless of the arithmetic. Because 6 GHz travels less far than 5 GHz, designing to use the newest band well generally means more access points at lower power, not fewer at higher power.
Do I need Wi-Fi 7, or is Wi-Fi 6E enough?
Wi-Fi 6E remains a good answer for most Kansas City homes. Wi-Fi 7 adds multi-link operation, which lets a capable client use more than one band at once and drops latency meaningfully — worth it if you already own Wi-Fi 7 devices, and worth it on new construction where the access-point locations are permanent and the cost of changing your mind later is high. The larger point is that the standard is not the bottleneck: a Wi-Fi 7 access point on a wireless backhaul, or a Wi-Fi 7 access point fed by a switch with no PoE budget left, will disappoint you exactly as reliably as an older one.
What PoE do access points need?
Modern access points generally want at least 802.3at — PoE+, about 30 watts at the port — and higher-tier Wi-Fi 7 units with multi-gig uplinks may want 802.3bt, PoE++, to bring every radio and port up at full capability. The trap is the switch, not the access point: a 24-port PoE switch has a total power budget that is usually well below 24 devices at full draw, so the budget is something to size during design alongside cameras, door readers and anything else drawing from the same switch. We size the PoE budget before we pick the switch, which is the opposite of how it usually gets bought.
