The actual difference: where the measurement happens
Strip the marketing away and there are two families of launch monitor. A camera-based unit photographs the ball, and usually the club, in the few inches around impact and computes the rest from what it saw at the strike. A radar unit tracks the ball through real flight and infers launch conditions from the trajectory it observes.
Everything a small room cares about follows from that one sentence. The camera needs a clean, correctly positioned view of a small window near the ball and nothing else. The radar needs distance — roughly 8 feet behind the ball and another 8 feet in front of it for it to read ball flight properly. Neither is the better technology in the abstract. One of them fits a Johnson County basement more easily than the other, which is a different claim entirely.
Mounting position is the second fork. A floor-standing camera unit sits beside the hitting area at ankle height and takes nothing from your ceiling. An overhead unit — ceiling-mounted, looking down at the ball — keeps the floor clean, which is genuinely nicer to live with, but it hangs in the room. In a room with height to spare that is a free upgrade. In a 9-foot basement it is a negotiation with your driver.
What 9 feet really means in a Leawood basement
Nine feet is a workable minimum for many golfers. Ten is the target, and the reason we keep saying so is that the extra foot stops people subconsciously shortening the swing out of fear — which is a slow way to ruin your golf while believing your simulator is fine.
It is also worth being precise about whose nine feet. It is the swing, not the golfer, that sets the requirement. The test we run on a site walk is unglamorous: take a full driver swing with a club in hand while somebody measures the highest point the clubhead reaches, then add a safety buffer above that. Two golfers of the same height routinely produce numbers four inches apart.
Then subtract the room. Finished basements in this metro rarely give you the number on the tape uninterrupted — an HVAC trunk crossing the swing zone, a steel beam, a sprinkler drop, a recessed can, and the launch-monitor bracket itself if the unit hangs. A basement that measures nine feet in the middle of the floor and eight-four under the ductwork is an eight-four room, because that is where the club goes. This is the single most common reason a simulator plan changes shape on the first visit.
Two things sometimes buy the height back, and both are worth checking before you rule the room out. If the ceiling is unfinished, the joist bays between obstructions can be left open in the swing zone rather than drywalled flat. And if a floated or framed subfloor is in the plan, take it out of the plan — in a room this tight, spending ceiling height on flooring is the worst trade available. What you cannot do is beat the ductwork by hoping. Move it, work around it, or pick a system that does not need the space it is stealing.
Depth, width, and the budget you did not know you were spending
Ceiling gets the attention; depth quietly settles the technology. A workable room starts around 16 feet deep, and 17–20 feet is where it becomes comfortable. Now spend it: the impact screen wants 1–2 feet of clear space behind it so it can flex and absorb the shot instead of firing the ball back at you, the golfer needs to stand somewhere with room behind for the backswing, and a radar unit wants its 8 feet behind the ball and 8 in front. Add those up honestly against your tape measure and you will usually find the answer has already been made for you.
Width is the forgotten one. Twelve feet is a hard minimum, 14–15 feet is comfortable, and the reason to want it is not the swing plane — it is being able to center the hitting area so the room serves right- and left-handed players, and having somewhere for a second person to stand that is not inside the swing. Simulator rooms become social rooms whether or not you planned for it.
How we would actually decide
Pick the camera unit at floor level when the ceiling is at or under about nine and a half feet with obstructions in it, the depth is basement-typical rather than generous, and you want the room to be usable by everyone in the house without a fitting session first. This is the majority of the Leawood, Prairie Village and Overland Park basements we walk. Pick radar when the room is purpose-built or the ceiling and depth are genuinely there, and when what you want from the machine is verification of real ball flight — you practice outdoors seriously, you are working on a swing change with a coach, or you want numbers that read the same on the range as they do at home. That is a legitimate reason to buy a TrackMan, and if that is your situation we will say so. You would specify the unit with us and we would build the room around it exactly as we would around anything else.
Let the software be the tiebreaker, not the opener. Each manufacturer ships its own environment, and third-party platforms such as GSPro and E6 Connect connect to a wide range of hardware, so the course list is rarely the deciding factor people expect it to be. Do check the specific combination you intend to run before you buy: compatibility is a matrix, not a promise. And whichever you land on, the simulator PC needs a real graphics card — a strong room running weak hardware feels laggy in a way no launch monitor can fix.
Then stop optimizing the monitor. The things that most often make a home simulator feel wrong are not the brand on the box: a hitting strip worn past its useful life, a mat that is not flush with the surrounding turf, a monitor placed outside its own specified position, an image washed out by uncontrolled light, and a room tight enough that the golfer is managing the ceiling instead of swinging. We have moved a unit eight inches and had the owner ask what we replaced.

Camera or radar — what actually changes in a small room?
Where the measurement happens. A camera-based unit reads the ball and club in the few inches around impact, so it needs a clear view of that small window and very little else; a radar unit measures the ball in flight and infers the rest, which is why it wants standoff — roughly 8 feet behind the ball and 8 feet in front of it. In a 17-to-20-foot basement, once you subtract the impact screen, the 1–2 feet of flex space behind it and the golfer’s own stance, the radar budget gets tight fast. That is a room-geometry fact rather than a quality judgement: outdoors, or in a purpose-built room with the depth, radar’s flight tracking is exactly what people buy it for.
Is 9 feet really enough ceiling for a golf simulator?
For many golfers, yes — but it is your swing, not your height, that decides, and the only honest test is a full driver swing with someone measuring the highest point the clubhead reaches, then adding a buffer above that. Then subtract everything hanging into that arc: ductwork, a beam, sprinkler drops, a light fixture, and the launch-monitor mount itself if the unit is a ceiling one. A 9-foot basement that is really 8-foot-4 under the ductwork is a different room from a 9-foot basement with clear joist bays, and we have specified different systems into two houses on the same Leawood street for exactly that reason.
Do I need TrackMan to get accurate numbers at home?
No, and framing it that way leads people to spend in the wrong place. Both platforms are used for serious work; the meaningful differences at home are what each one needs from the room, how you like the software, and whether you care about ball-flight verification that matches what happens outdoors. The larger accuracy risk in a home build is not the brand — it is a worn hitting strip, an unlevel mat, a monitor placed outside its own specified position, or a room so tight the golfer shortens the swing without noticing.
