How to build a weatherproof outdoor AV setup
Outdoor gear outside, the equipment that runs it inside, and every connection between them sealed.
An outdoor system lasts because the equipment was rated for outside, not because it was wrapped up afterward. That is the whole of it. A Kansas City patio delivers direct sun, a hard freeze, humidity, dust and wind inside a single year, and equipment built for a living room meets all of it with no defense. We build outdoor AV across the metro from Overland Park, and this is the part of the job where we do not bend.
The rest of this piece is the equipment and the connections: what goes outside, what stays inside, and the order the two get joined. The planning questions that come first are in eight things to know about outdoor AV.
Outdoor-rated outside, everything else indoors
The display is an outdoor television, built and rated for the weather. SunBrite and Samsung Terrace make them, we install them, and the reason is not brand loyalty: an outdoor set is sealed against moisture, built for a wider temperature swing, and made to be seen in daylight. The speakers are outdoor-rated, with sealed enclosures and corrosion-resistant hardware. The mounts and the fasteners are rated for outdoor service too, which is the item most often quietly downgraded on a bid.
The counter-proposal we hear is the enclosure: a standard television in a weatherproof, temperature-controlled cabinet. We do not build that. A cabinet keeps rain off a device that was never asked to handle heat, cold or humidity, it adds a second thing that can fail, and it puts a locked box between a technician and whatever is failing inside it.
What does belong indoors is everything that drives the system. Amplifiers, receivers, streaming sources and network gear live in the climate-controlled equipment closet with the rest of the rack, and reach the patio over cable rated for the run they are making. Speakers are engineered for weather. The electronics behind them are not, and no cabinet changes that.
The order we build it in
The sequence matters because each step closes off the shortcuts available in the next one.
Power and conduit first
Before anything is mounted, the circuits and the pathways go in: exterior-rated receptacles where the equipment will land, conduit from the house to each location, and a spare pathway alongside them. Pulling a wire through conduit later takes an afternoon. Trenching a patio that has already been poured does not, which is why this step decides what the system can still become in five years.
The network path
An outdoor television is a network device, and so is anything controlling it. Run cable to the display, run cable to wherever an outdoor access point will mount, and treat Wi-Fi as coverage for phones and tablets rather than as the backbone. Coverage that stops at the back door is the usual finding, and the fix belongs in the trench rather than a range extender.
Mounting for sun and sightline
The display goes where the light and the seating agree. Sun direction through the hours the space gets used, reflections off water or glass, the shade a roof or pergola casts, and viewing height from the seats people sit in. The mount has to hold that position through freeze and thaw without seizing, which is a hardware decision as much as a placement one.
Audio placed for the yard, not the wall
The easy install puts two speakers on the house wall and aims them at the property line. Placing them out in the space instead, closer to where people sit, gets even coverage at a lower volume and keeps the music off the neighbors. Cable runs get sealed at every termination: dielectric grease on the contacts, self-fusing silicone tape over the joint, drip loops so water leaves the connection rather than entering it.
Control that works with wet hands
Outside, control gets used by somebody holding a drink with a towel over one shoulder. A weather-rated keypad by the door that turns the zone on and sets the volume covers most of it, with the phone available for everything else. Whatever the interface, it should reach the same sources and the same music as the rest of the house, so nothing has to be re-paired to move a song outside.
The winter plan
The last decision is what happens in January. Covers for the display and the keypads, seals and drip loops checked before the cold arrives, drainage paths clear, and connections dry. Outdoor-rated equipment stays up through the season by design. If a system needs to be carried indoors each fall, the wrong equipment was specified in the spring.
What we look at on a walk
On a site walk the questions are short and mostly about the connections. Where does the power come from, what pathway exists between the house and the patio, where does the rack live, how far is the longest run, and what is the sun doing at seven in the evening in July. Those answers set the equipment list. The equipment list rarely sets them.
Anything specified against that, with the rated gear outside and the electronics indoors, tends to survive the seasons quietly. Anything specified around it comes back on the calendar.

Can an indoor TV go outside in a weatherproof enclosure?
We do not build it that way. A box keeps rain off the panel, and rain is the least of what a Kansas City patio does to an indoor set: summer sun drives the panel past the temperature it was designed for, a hard freeze reaches it overnight, and humidity finds its way behind the bezel either way. An enclosure also puts a locked case between a technician and the failure. An outdoor-rated display costs more once. The enclosure route costs less once and again later.
Where does the amplifier live?
Indoors, in the climate-controlled equipment closet with the rest of the rack, driving the outdoor speakers over outdoor-rated cable. Speakers are engineered to sit in the weather; amplifiers and sources are not, and putting them outside is the decision that generates the service call. It also keeps the outdoor zones on the same matrix and the same app as the rest of the house.
How do we tell an outdoor rating from a weather-resistant label?
Ask for the manufacturer spec sheet rather than the marketing page, and look for a stated outdoor rating along with an operating temperature range that covers a Kansas City winter as well as an August afternoon. Sealed enclosures, corrosion-resistant hardware and UV-stable materials are the things to read for. Weather-resistant and outdoor-rated are not the same claim, and the spec sheet is where the difference shows up.
Does anything have to come down for the winter?
Outdoor-rated equipment is built to stay up, so the winter work is inspection rather than removal: covers on, seals and drip loops intact, drainage paths clear, connections dry. Cushions and portable pieces go away; the system stays. If a season ends with something needing to be carried inside, that piece was the wrong piece.
