Lutron RadioRA 3 vs HomeWorks: is RA3 enough?
The within-Lutron decision, decided by your walls rather than by your square footage.
For a finished five-bedroom house in Prairie Village — or anywhere else in Kansas City, Missouri and the Johnson County suburbs — Lutron RadioRA 3 is almost always enough, and IntegrateIT, a Lutron Certified Installer in Overland Park, KS, will tell you so before quoting you HomeWorks. This is the tier decision inside Lutron, which is a different argument from Lutron vs Control4 for lighting or the three-platform head-to-head. Those settle which company runs your lighting. This one starts after you have already decided it should be Lutron, which is the point most homeowners actually get stuck at.
What they actually are
Strip away the marketing and there is exactly one architectural difference between these two systems. Where the dimming happens.
RadioRA 3 dims in the wall. Each device is a dimmer or a switch that drops into a gang box you already have, controlling the circuit already landed there. The devices talk wirelessly to a repeater that coordinates the system, holds the scenes and keeps the timeclock. Nothing is home-run anywhere. That is the whole trick, and it is why an RA3 house does not need a single wall opened.
HomeWorks dims in a panel. Lighting circuits are home-run back to dimming modules in an equipment room, and a processor coordinates them. The wall carries keypads — buttons wired to the processor, controlling nothing directly. Press one and the instruction travels to the panel, which sets the loads. This is why you can have a room with eight separate fixture groups and one three-button keypad on the wall.
Every other difference people list is downstream of that, which is why the honest comparison is not feature-by-feature. Both run an astronomical timeclock, so the house tracks sunset rather than a fixed hour and adjusts through the year. Both drive Lutron motorized shades. Both integrate natively with Control4 and Crestron sitting above them. Both are programmed in the same Lutron software by the same certification, so both leave a project file another Lutron Certified Installer can pick up — the house is not locked to whoever wired it, on either tier. The differences are about scale and about the wall.
The five questions that settle it
We ask these on the site walk, in this order, and by the fourth one the answer is usually obvious to the homeowner before we say it.
1. Is the house open, or is it finished? This is the question, and the other four are refinements of it. If you are building, or gutting to studs, HomeWorks costs you cable and panel space at a moment when both are cheap. If the house is finished — plaster, hardwood, a finished lower level, no chases from the panel to the second floor — then choosing HomeWorks means choosing demolition, and the demolition is not the small part of that number.
2. How many fixture groups does your worst room have? Walk into the great room and count what should be separately controllable: cans over the seating, cans over the kitchen side, pendants, cove, sconces, art lights, the fireplace wall. If that number is three or four, RA3 handles it and the wall looks fine. If it is seven, RA3 means seven devices to put somewhere and a wall that starts to look like a mixing desk, while HomeWorks means seven circuits in the panel and one engraved keypad by the door. This is the single most common reason a genuinely finished house still ends up on HomeWorks.
3. What kind of loads are they? Ordinary dimmable LED and incandescent are fine anywhere. Where it gets interesting is everything else — low-voltage landscape transformers, certain architectural drivers, anything that wants a control protocol rather than a phase-cut dimmer. A panel gives you a module chosen per load type. A wall dimmer gives you a compatibility list. If your lighting designer is specifying fixtures by part number, send us the schedule before you pick a tier; it will decide this on its own.
4. Does the wall have to look designed? HomeWorks carries the architectural keypad families that interior designers specify by name, with factory engraving on the buttons, and in a house where the millwork and the hardware were chosen with real care the keypads are part of that conversation. RA3 devices are handsome and entirely appropriate in most homes — but if your designer has a finish schedule and an opinion about faceplates, that is a signal worth listening to.
5. How big is it, actually, and how is it built? Size alone is a weak signal — a 4,500 square foot house with simple rooms is an easy RA3 house. Construction is a stronger one: RF has to get through what your house is made of, and a sprawling stone or plaster-and-lath house with a detached structure is a different coverage problem than a compact one, solved with additional repeaters and, occasionally, not solved cleanly at all. At the top end the arithmetic settles it anyway: HomeWorks QSX scales to 200+ zones, and nothing else in the Lutron line is aimed at that house.
What drives the cost of each tier
Neither tier has a menu price. Three things move the number on both: how many zones the house ends up with, how many keypads there are and where they land, and whether motorized shades join the system. On HomeWorks, add what the wire costs in your particular walls.
Caseta. 8-12 dimmers, a bridge and 2-3 keypads for a typical 3,000-5,000 sqft home. Genuinely good product, and the right answer for a guest house, an outbuilding or a rental — not for a five-bedroom primary residence you intend to keep.
RadioRA 3. A whole-home install at 24-36 zones with 6-12 keypads and motorized shade integration. That is a real system: every meaningful light in the house under scene control, keypads where the family touches the walls, shades on the same schedule, and an app that is not the primary interface. For a finished five-bedroom house this is what “done properly” looks like.
HomeWorks QSX. A flagship install on a 5,000-10,000 sqft home with full keypad replacement, motorized shades, custom engraving and Crestron or Control4 integration. Zone count is the more useful axis once you are in this tier, and it runs from a dozen zones to fifty and beyond with motorized shades and bespoke programming.
Two notes on adding things up. Shades are usually separate: motorized shades are priced per shade installed on either tier, on top of the lighting scope, except at the largest HomeWorks scale where a full shade package normally sits inside the scope already. And the two-stack case has its own shape: where a finished house wants whole-home automation as well as lighting and the wire is not there, Control4 with Lutron RadioRA 3 gives most of the new-construction experience without the demolition — frequently the most sensible answer on this entire page for a Prairie Village or Brookside house.

The timeline gap is bigger than the price gap
An RA3 whole-home retrofit runs 4-8 days — one electrician, one programmer, and a house that stays livable throughout. HomeWorks in new construction runs 2-4 weeks across phases: rough-in during framing, processor install at trim, keypads and commissioning at finish. That is not slower work, it is work paced by the build. HomeWorks as a retrofit in a finished house runs 3-6 weeks, and every extra day of that is cabling chases — attic work, closet stacks, patched drywall, a painter afterwards.
Programming and commissioning is the last 3-5 days regardless of tier, which is worth saying out loud because it is the part that decides whether you like the system. The scenes, the levels, the fade times, the button grouping and the engraving text are the same craft on RA3 as on HomeWorks. A well-commissioned RA3 house is far nicer to live in than a HomeWorks house that somebody left on factory defaults.
Why Prairie Village is usually an RA3 answer
The Johnson County housing stock does most of the arguing here. Prairie Village is largely mid-century — finished houses with plaster or older drywall, hardwood over the main level, finished lower levels, and very few useful vertical chases between the panel and the second floor. So the realistic comparison is not RA3 against HomeWorks on a spreadsheet. It is RA3 versus HomeWorks plus demolition, plus patching, plus paint, plus weeks of a house being a job site — for a lighting experience the family would struggle to tell apart in daily use, because the scenes are the same scenes. That is why we quote RA3 into most finished Prairie Village, Brookside and Roeland Park houses without apology.
The picture flips in three local cases. New construction anywhere in the metro, where the cable is nearly free. Down-to-studs renovations, common in Mission Hills and older Leawood, which put every wall on the table at once. And estate builds where the zone count and the design brief point the same direction. In those, HomeWorks is not an upgrade — it is simply the correct system.
The one mistake worth avoiding
If you are building and undecided, run the lighting home runs to a panel location anyway. Cable during framing is the cheapest thing on the project, and having it there means you can commission RA3 at move-in and still convert to panel dimming in year six if the house turns out to want it; without it, that conversion is a construction project and effectively nobody does it. The reverse mistake is more expensive and more common: buying HomeWorks for a finished house because it is the flagship, then discovering at rough-in what the chases cost. We would rather have that conversation at the site walk. If the answer is RA3, we will say RA3 — the smaller system, commissioned by somebody who cares about the fade times, is the better house to live in.

Not as an upgrade in any meaningful sense — the move is not a firmware step or a swap of the head end, it is installing the home-run wiring you did not install the first time, plus a panel, plus a processor. In a finished house that is the expensive part and it is exactly what choosing RA3 avoided. So treat it as a real fork rather than a staged path. The one case where staging works is new construction: run the lighting home runs to a panel location while the walls are open even if you commission RA3 at move-in, and you have bought yourself a genuine option for the price of a little cable. If you are building and undecided, that is the move.
