What changes when the golfer is a guest

The equipment list for a commercial bay looks a lot like a good residential one. Almost everything that is genuinely different comes from a single fact: you do not know who is swinging, how hard, or how well. Design for that and the room stays open; design for a careful owner and you spend year one repairing it.

  • The enclosure is safety equipment, not trim. Side netting with real overlap, a ceiling baffle, padded and protected frame edges, and a screen tensioned to absorb rather than reject the ball. Mishits go sideways and upward far more than owners expect, and a commercial bay sees more of them in a week than a home bay sees in a year.
  • Turf and hitting strips are consumables. Plan the replacement cycle and the labor to do it into the operating budget from day one. A worn strip changes how the club interacts with the ball, which shows up as customers complaining that the numbers are wrong long before anyone thinks to look at the mat.
  • Nothing lives in the ball path. Projector, speakers, light fixtures, cameras, sprinkler heads, the sim PC, the tablet. Everything gets placed and then re-checked against the ball path — including the shanked ball path, which is the one that finds the pendant light nobody thought about.
  • Staff have to see the bay. Sightlines from the bar or host stand are a design input, not an afterthought. Where the layout will not allow it, a camera feed on a house display does the same job.
  • One button opens it and one button closes it. Lights, projector, sim PC, audio and screen belong on a scene, not on five separate switches in three locations. The alternative is a manager doing a nine-step ritual twice a day, forever.
  • It has to be quiet next door. A driver strike into an impact screen is a genuinely loud event. Where a bay backs onto a dining room or private-event space, isolation and enclosure detailing belong in the design rather than in an apology.

Bay geometry: how many bays a room actually holds

Operators usually arrive with a bay count already in mind, taken from the floor area. The floor area is rarely the constraint. Ceiling height and depth are, and the numbers we work to are the same ones we publish for homes — a commercial bay does not get to be smaller just because it is a business.

  • Ceiling: 9 ft workable, 10 ft the target. And it is the swing, not the golfer, that sets it — the honest test is a full driver swing with someone measuring the highest point the clubhead reaches, plus a buffer. In a commercial room you are sizing for the tallest guest you will ever admit, not for the person signing the contract. Anything hanging into that arc — ductwork, sprinkler drops, structure, light fixtures — turns a 10 ft ceiling into an 8 ft one.
  • Width: 12 ft minimum, 14–15 ft comfortable, per bay. That is what lets the hitting area be centered and serves right- and left-handed players from the same bay, which matters far more commercially than it does at home. Shared walls or dividers between bays need their own allowance on top.
  • Depth: 16 ft workable, 17–20 ft comfortable. Leave 1–2 ft behind the impact screen so it can flex and take the shot instead of firing it back into the room.
  • Radar wants standoff. Roughly 8 ft behind the ball and another 8 ft in front of it for a radar-based launch monitor to read ball flight properly. Camera-based and overhead units read at impact and are more forgiving of a shallow room, but they buy that with mounting-height and placement rules of their own. This is usually the single constraint that decides both the bay count and the technology.

Projection and light control — the part venues get wrong

The most common complaint we are called about in an existing venue is a washed-out, slightly crooked image. Both have the same root: the bay was treated as a screen on a wall rather than as a projection room that happens to serve drinks.

An impact screen is engineered to stop a golf ball first. It is matte, roughly neutral in gain, and has no ambient-light rejection, so every lumen the room throws at it lands in the picture as gray. Bar lighting is the enemy of a simulator image, and the fix is a lighting design rather than a bigger projector: fixtures aimed and shielded away from the screen, bay lighting on its own dimmable circuit so a scene can drop it for play without darkening the room where people are eating, and no uncontrolled daylight on the screen wall.

Then the projector. We specify the 4K short-throw laser class — 5,000+ lumens — ceiling mounted at the throw distance calculated for that screen width, so the image fills the screen instead of spilling onto the surround, and placed above and behind the golfer so the swing does not throw a shadow across the ball flight. Alignment is physical: the projector goes square to the screen, level, on the screen’s center line, adjusted with lens shift. Digital keystone correction is the last resort, not the method — it discards pixels and softens the image to compensate for a mount that is not straight, and on a twelve-foot-wide screen you can see it from the bar. Audio, signage and the rest of the venue

A simulator bay has an audio problem that a home does not: it needs to be immersive inside the bay and inaudible in the dining room, while the venue still wants background music everywhere and the ability to page over all of it. That is a zoned DSP job, and it is the same architecture we build for restaurant and hospitality audio: each bay is its own zone with its own level and EQ, dining, bar and patio keep theirs, and paging or a live-music override takes priority when it is keyed. Presets do the daypart work so nobody is turning knobs between lunch and league night.

Leaderboards, tee sheets and league standings ride the same stack as the rest of the room — our digital signage work covers the publishing side — and bay video can be routed to house displays through the same distribution we use for multi-room video, so the bar watches bay three finish the hole. Lighting scenes for the bays sit inside the venue’s wider commercial lighting control rather than beside it.

The network under the bays

Simulator PCs are not guests on your guest network. Every bay gets a wired drop, and the PCs live on their own VLAN — segmented from guest Wi-Fi, from payment traffic and from back-office systems — on managed switching with PoE for the cameras and access points. This is the difference between a bay that plays identically at 8pm on a Saturday and one that stutters exactly when the room is full, and it is the cheapest part of the project to get right at rough-in and the most disruptive to fix afterwards.

The PCs themselves need somewhere ventilated, reachable by staff without walking through a bay, and out of the ball path. Ubiquiti is normally what this gets built on; the same approach underpins our multi-tenant network and commercial AV work.

Bar, restaurant, club — three different briefs

  • A bar or entertainment concept runs the highest duty cycle and the widest skill range, so it is the build that leans hardest on enclosure hardening, consumable planning, sightlines and idiot-proof control. Bay audio isolation matters because the bays are inside the room people are drinking in.
  • A restaurant adding one or two bays is usually solving a dwell-time and private-dining problem rather than a golf problem. Here the bays have to disappear into the room acoustically and visually when they are not in use, and the zone audio and lighting integration matter more than the launch monitor does.
  • A country club or private club has the most demanding members and the longest expected service life. Data credibility carries weight because members are comparing numbers to their fittings and to the range, the room often doubles as a teaching and fitting space, and the build has to survive a committee, a capital cycle and staff turnover. Documented as-builts and a maintainable control layer are worth more here than any single piece of hardware.

How is a commercial bay different from a home simulator?

Duty cycle and unknown golfers. A home bay is swung in by two or three people who know the room; a commercial bay is swung in by whoever booked the hour, including a first-timer with a driver and a group four drinks in. That changes the build in five concrete ways: the enclosure and side netting have to catch genuine mishits rather than the occasional heel strike; the turf and hitting strip are consumables on a replacement schedule instead of a one-time purchase; every projector, speaker, light fixture and camera has to sit physically out of the ball path; the room needs sightlines so staff can see the bay from the bar; and the whole thing has to open and close from one button because it will be operated by people who did not read the manual.

How much room does each bay need, and how many bays will my space fit?

Use the same geometry we use residentially, then add a shared-wall allowance per bay. About 10 ft of clear ceiling is the target — 9 ft is workable for many golfers but it is your swing, not your height, that sets the number, so the honest test is a full driver swing with someone measuring the highest point the clubhead reaches. Width runs 12 ft as a hard minimum and 14–15 ft as a comfortable target per bay so both right- and left-handed players can be centered. Depth runs 16 ft workable and 17–20 ft comfortable, with 1–2 ft left behind the impact screen so it can flex and absorb the shot. Radar-based launch monitors want roughly 8 ft behind the ball and another 8 ft in front of it, which is usually what settles how many bays a given footprint really holds. We measure the space before anyone counts bays.

What kills the image in a bar? Our screens look washed out.

Ambient light, almost every time. An impact screen is built to stop a golf ball first and project second — it is a matte, roughly neutral-gain surface with no ambient-light rejection, so every lumen the bar throws at it raises the black level and the picture goes gray. The fixes, in order: get the fixtures off the screen (aim, shield, or move them, and put the bay lighting on its own dimmable circuit rather than the room’s); specify a projector with real headroom for the screen size — the 4K short-throw laser class we install runs 5,000+ lumens; and mount and align the projector physically rather than correcting it in software. Digital keystone is the tell of a rushed install: it throws away pixels and softens the image to hide a mount that is not square to the screen.

Can the bays share the venue’s music, TVs and paging?

Yes, and they should. Simulator audio wants to be loud inside the bay and absent outside it, while the venue wants background music everywhere and the ability to page over all of it. That is a zoned DSP problem, the same one we solve for restaurant audio: each bay becomes its own zone with its own level and EQ, the dining room and patio keep theirs, and paging or a live-music override takes priority over everything when it is keyed.
