A television that disappears is three problems solved together. Four ways a television disappears

There is no best one. There is a right one for a given wall, ceiling height and budget, and the trade-offs are genuinely different — so this is the conversation we have before any hardware is named.

  • 1. The art panel. A display designed to sit in standby showing artwork, behind a matte anti-glare front that kills the mirror-black look, in a slim frame that reads as a picture frame. Most of the category runs a single thin cable from the panel to a separate connection box you hide in a cabinet, which is why they mount so cleanly. Trade-off: it is still a rectangle on the wall, and the matte finish that makes the artwork convincing is a compromise for a dark-room film night. Best in a great room, kitchen or office where the wall wants art anyway.
  • 2. The motorized lift. The display leaves the room. It rises out of a credenza or an island, drops from a ceiling cavity, or swings out from behind millwork, driven by a mechanism that is part of the control system rather than a separate remote. Trade-off: it is the most expensive option, it needs a cabinet or ceiling designed around the travel and the weight, and it introduces a moving part with a service life. It is also the approach that leaves you a genuinely blank wall or an unobstructed view.
  • 3. The mirror display. A two-way mirror in front of the panel, so the wall reads as a framed mirror until the display comes on behind it. Very effective in a primary bath, a gym or over a fireplace where a mirror is plausible furniture. Trade-off: some light is lost through the mirror layer, so it wants a room that is not fighting afternoon sun, and the frame has to be chosen with the room rather than from a catalog.
  • 4. Millwork and sliding panels. A conventional display behind cabinet doors, a sliding art panel, or a recessed niche with a cover — the oldest answer and often the best one when there is already a cabinetmaker on the job. Trade-off: it is a millwork budget, not an AV one, and the panel and the display have to be coordinated early so the niche depth, the mount and the cable route all agree. When a designer is drawing the room, this is usually the version that looks most like the house.

Whichever way it goes, the same rule applies: decide before drywall if you possibly can. Every one of these options is cheaper, cleaner and less invasive when the wall is open — which is the same argument we make on new-construction low-voltage projects, and the reason we like being in the room with the architect and the designer early.

The mount is a depth problem before it is a bracket problem

The gap between a display that looks hung and one that looks built-in is usually about an inch, and that inch is spent on things behind the panel rather than on the bracket itself. Here is the whole list, in the order it gets decided.

  • Mount type sets the depth budget. A low-profile flush mount holds the display tight to the wall and gives you nothing behind it, which is why the boxes have to be recessed. A tilt mount buys a little angle. A full-motion articulating arm folds to a thicker stack and needs solid structure to carry the leverage of an extended arm — worth it in a kitchen or a corner where the display has to swing, wrong for a wall that wants to look flat.
  • Recessed power, installed by an electrician. A recessed receptacle sits inside the wall so the plug and cord clear the back of the display. This is the correct way to get a flush mount, and it is also the safe one — a manufacturer’s power cord is not rated to run inside a wall cavity, and the workaround kits people buy instead are a code conversation nobody wants to have at closing.
  • Low-voltage in its own recessed box, offset from the power. Signal and power kept apart keeps interference out of the picture, and a separate box means the cable route can be serviced without touching the circuit.
  • Conduit, not bare cable. We pull signal cable through conduit between the display box and the source location. It costs almost nothing at rough-in and it means the next display generation — a different cable, a different bandwidth — gets pulled in twenty minutes instead of opening the wall.
  • Structure, verified rather than assumed. The fasteners land in real framing, masonry anchors go into masonry, and where the wall cannot carry the load, blocking gets added before anything is hung. A display coming off a wall is the one failure in this category that damages more than the display.

The fireplace question, answered honestly

Most concealment calls we take start with a fireplace, so it is worth being direct. Two things are genuinely working against it. The first is geometry: a display above a mantel usually lands well above seated eye level, and a viewing angle that is fine for a football game on a Sunday is tiring for a film. The second is heat — a working firebox drives warm air up the chimney breast, and every display has a published operating-temperature limit.

When the fireplace is genuinely the only wall, the fix is mechanical rather than optimistic. A pull-down mantel mount brings the display forward and down to eye level when it is in use and returns it flush when it is not. A properly detailed mantel shelf deflects rising heat away from the mount location. And we take a temperature reading at the mount position with the fireplace actually running before committing, rather than after. When there is a better wall in the room, we say so first — and if the answer is that the room wants a real viewing wall rather than a compromise, that is a media room conversation instead of a mounting one.

What else has to disappear

A concealed display with a shelf of sources under it and a soundbar on the mantel has not really been concealed. Two more things have to go.

The sources. Streamers, cable boxes and consoles move to a rack somewhere else — a closet, a basement, a millwork bay — and the video comes back to the display over structured cable using an HDMI extender or a matrix, with control returning over IP or IR so the remote behaves exactly as before. The underrated benefit: replacing a source no longer means taking the television off the wall.

The speakers. Where the design intent is no visible electronics at all, Sonance Invisible Series speakers mount inside the wall or ceiling cavity, get skim-coated and painted, and vanish completely. In-wall speakers behind paintable grilles are the middle option and disappear into a painted wall at viewing distance. Both are better-sounding answers than a soundbar and both need to be decided at the same time as the mount, because the wall gets opened once — and which of the two a given wall actually warrants is argued through in invisible speakers vs in-ceiling speakers.

Older houses: Mission Hills, Brookside, Prairie Village

The pre-war and mid-century housing stock on both sides of the state line changes this job more than any other variable, and it is worth knowing before you get quotes. Plaster over wood lath does not behave like drywall — it cracks outward from a careless cut and it will not hold a fastener the way a stud will. Framing is not always where modern spacing says it should be. Masonry chimney breasts need masonry anchors and a plan for the cable route, because you cannot fish a wall that is solid. And a great many of these houses have neither an attic nor a basement above or below the wall in question, which means the route is the entire design problem.

So we plan the route first and the bracket second, we locate real structure rather than trusting a stud finder over lath, and we do not put a fastener through original millwork without raising it first. Where the wall genuinely will not take a clean route, the honest answer is a surface raceway detailed to match the trim, or millwork built with a cabinetmaker — and we would rather propose that than open a plaster wall we cannot close invisibly. One button, or it will not get used

Concealment adds steps, and steps are what stop a room getting used. So the control layer is designed with the hardware rather than bolted on: one press on a Control4 or Crestron Home keypad takes the display out of art or standby, runs the lift, wakes the source, selects the input, drops the shades and takes the Lutron lighting to a scene — and the same press in reverse puts the wall back to artwork and the room back to itself. Is there a TV mounting and concealment service in Mission Hills?

Yes. Mission Hills, Brookside and the older Prairie Village streets are a large share of this work, and they are a different job from a new build. Those houses have plaster over wood lath rather than drywall, masonry chimneys, framing that is not on modern spacing, and frequently no attic or basement access above the wall you want to use. So the mount is engineered to the wall rather than pulled off a shelf: we locate real structure, use the anchoring the substrate actually calls for, and plan the cable route before anything is cut, because in a plaster wall the route is the constraint. Art-panel TV or a motorized lift — which one should I pick?

They solve different problems. An art-panel display is always in the room; it just stops looking like a television, showing artwork behind a matte anti-glare finish with a slim frame and, on most models, a single thin cable to a connection box you hide elsewhere. It suits a room where a wall wants a picture on it. A motorized lift removes the display from the room entirely — up out of a credenza, down from a ceiling, or out from behind millwork — which is what you want when the wall is meant to be blank, when the view behind the TV is the point, or when a primary bedroom should not have a black rectangle facing the bed. Lifts cost more, need a cabinet or ceiling cavity designed around the mechanism, and add a moving part with its own service life. Art panels are simpler and cheaper; a lift is what you use when the television genuinely must not be in the room.

Can you mount a TV over my fireplace, and should you?

We can, and we will tell you honestly when it is the wrong plan. Two real problems: viewing angle and heat. A display above a mantel usually sits far higher than seated eye level, and craning upward for a two-hour film is a complaint we hear from people who already did it. Heat is the second — a working firebox pushes warm air up the chimney breast, and manufacturers publish operating-temperature limits for a reason. When the fireplace is the only viable wall, the fixes are mechanical: a pull-down mantel mount that brings the display forward and tilts it down to eye level when in use and returns it flush when it is not, a properly detailed mantel shelf that deflects rising heat, and a thermal check at the mount location on a day the fireplace is actually running. When there is a better wall, we say so before quoting the mount.

How do you hide the cables, including the power cord?

Signal and power are two separate problems with two separate answers, and this is where most self-installs go wrong. Signal cable is easy: in-wall rated cable runs inside the wall legally and safely, and we pull it in conduit so the run can be replaced when a future display wants a different cable. Power is not — a manufacturer’s power cord is not rated to be buried in a wall cavity, so the correct fix is an electrician-installed recessed receptacle behind the display, positioned so the plug clears the back of a flush mount, with the low-voltage box offset from it to keep noise out of the picture. Then the mount sits tight to the wall with nothing visible above the baseboard. That combination — recessed box, conduit, offset low-voltage — is what makes a flush display look built-in instead of hung.

Where do the cable box, streamer and game console go if the display is flush to the wall?

Ideally nowhere near it. Sources move to a rack — a closet, a basement, a piece of millwork somewhere else in the house — and the video is carried to the display over structured cable using an HDMI extender or matrix, which is the same architecture our multi-room video work uses. AVPro Edge and Blustream are the two distribution lines we are authorized on for exactly this. Control comes back over IP or IR, so the remote still works even though the box is two floors down. The result is a wall with one display on it and no shelf of blinking equipment underneath, and it has a second benefit people do not anticipate: when a source is replaced, nobody has to take the television off the wall.

Can the television disappear and the speakers disappear too?

Yes, and in a room being concealed properly the speakers usually matter more, because a soundbar under a hidden display defeats the point. Sonance Invisible Series speakers mount inside the wall or ceiling cavity and are skim-coated and painted so nothing shows at all — no grille, no bezel — which is the approach we use when a designer has drawn a wall that cannot carry a speaker. In-wall speakers behind paintable grilles are the middle option, and they disappear into a painted wall at normal viewing distance. Can one button turn the artwork off and start the movie?

That is the point of having an integrator do it. On Control4 or Crestron Home one press takes the display out of art or standby mode, wakes the source, selects the right input, drops the shades, and takes the Lutron lighting to a scene — and the same press in reverse puts the room back. On a motorized-lift installation the lift is part of that sequence rather than a separate remote, which is what keeps a concealed television from becoming a two-step ritual nobody performs.
