A doorbell that goes offline every few days is almost never a broken doorbell. IntegrateIT installs video doorbells across the Kansas City metro from Overland Park, and fixes the ones that keep dropping off Wi-Fi. Six reasons a doorbell drops, in the order we test them

A video doorbell is the hardest client in the house to keep online, and it is not close. It sits outside the building envelope, behind whatever your exterior wall is made of, on the lowest-power radio in the product, drawing from wiring that was installed for a mechanical chime. Rebooting it treats none of that. Here is what we actually check.

  • 1. Transformer voltage, measured under load. Most wired video doorbells want 16 to 24 VAC. Plenty of Kansas City houses still run the original transformer sized for a chime that drew almost nothing, and it cannot power video, Wi-Fi, recording and the chime at once. The tell is intermittency rather than failure, and a tired transformer reads fine at rest — you have to measure it while it is working.
  • 2. Where the access point actually is. One access point covers roughly 2,500 square feet of open interior. A doorbell is outside that envelope by definition, with masonry, stone, stucco or plaster and lath between it and the radio. The fix is an access point placed to cover the entry, not a more expensive router in the basement.
  • 3. Band steering. A single network name for both bands lets the router hand the doorbell to 5 GHz, which does not make it through an exterior wall, and the doorbell does not fall back gracefully. Pinning it to 2.4 GHz — or giving the IoT network its own name — ends this class of problem permanently.
  • 4. Roaming between mesh nodes. With multiple access points, a low-powered client latches onto whichever it associated with first and holds on well past usefulness. Properly configured minimum signal thresholds push it to let go and re-join the node that can actually hear it.
  • 5. Channel congestion. On a tight Prairie Village or Brookside block you are sharing 2.4 GHz with a dozen neighbors. Channel planning is unglamorous and it is frequently the difference between a doorbell that works and one that works when the neighbors are out.
  • 6. Addressing. A short DHCP lease, or an IoT VLAN that was introduced after the doorbell was set up. Our standard network build puts doorbells, locks and cameras on segments away from your laptops, and a device moved onto one without being re-enrolled looks exactly like a Wi-Fi problem.

Causes two through six are all the same underlying issue: the network was never designed for the number and kind of devices now hanging off it. If the doorbell is dropping, something else in the house almost certainly is too — you just have not noticed yet. The permanent fix: take the radio out of it

The most reliable doorbell is one that does not use Wi-Fi. A doorbell on Power over Ethernet takes power and data down a single Cat6 run, so the flakiest link in the chain stops existing, and the video is written to a recorder in your house instead of to a subscription. Ubiquiti’s UniFi Protect doorbell is the one we specify most often, because it lands on the same platform as the cameras and the network and appears in the same place as everything else.

Whether that is a two-hour job or a non-starter is decided by one question: is there a basement or crawlspace under the front entry? In most of Johnson County the answer is yes, which is why the cable pull is usually straightforward. Over slab with finished ceilings below and no chase, it is not, and then wireless done properly is the right answer rather than a consolation prize. We will tell you which house you have before quoting either.

The wired path also makes the doorbell part of the security system instead of an app beside it: the press lands on your on-site recorder alongside the camera covering the same approach, and Control4 surfaces the front door on the touch panel so it rings the kitchen, raises the entry lighting after dark, and shows lock state on the same screen.

The install details that decide whether you like it

  • The angle is worth more than the resolution. A camera aimed at siding is a 4K picture of siding. We read the approach, the step, and where packages actually get set down, then use an angled bracket or wedge to put the walkway in frame. Narrow trim, recessed entries and side-on doors need one nearly every time.
  • The mount follows the surface. Masonry gets pilot holes and real anchors; wood and composite trim get a snug, straight, weather-conscious mount. The body locks to the bracket with the manufacturer’s security screw so it is not a thing somebody pops off on the way past.
  • The chime has to actually work. A mismatched or miswired chime buzzes, false-rings, or does nothing indoors at all — and it is a separate problem from the doorbell being online. Where a mechanical chime is staying, the chime kit goes in properly rather than being left out because the app has a sound.
  • Wiring that is not fighting the mount. Conductors routed through the center of the plate, seated under the terminals at the right tension, no pinched insulation and no loose copper. Brittle or too-short original wire gets fixed before anything is locked down rather than after.
  • Alerts tuned to your walkway. Motion zones and sensitivity set to the approach rather than the street, so the alerts mean something. A doorbell that cries wolf forty times a day gets muted, and a muted doorbell is not a security device.

My Ring doorbell keeps dropping off wifi at my house in Prairie Village — who can fix that properly?

Why does a video doorbell keep dropping off Wi-Fi?

Six causes, and they stack. (1) It is the furthest client in the house — mounted outside, behind brick, stone, stucco or plaster and lath, all of which weaken Wi-Fi badly, with a metal door frame beside it. (2) Band steering: one network name for both bands lets the router push the doorbell onto 5 GHz, which does not survive the trip outside, and the doorbell will not fall back cleanly. (3) Roaming: with mesh nodes it latches onto the node it saw first and clings to it well past the point of usefulness. (4) Power: a doorbell that browns out under load drops its radio, and a weak or aging transformer is the cause most often missed. (5) Channel congestion, which in a close-set Prairie Village or Brookside block means a dozen neighboring networks on the same 2.4 GHz channels. (6) Addressing — a short DHCP lease or an IoT VLAN change that the doorbell was never told about. We test in that order because that is roughly the order of how often each one is the answer.

What transformer voltage does a video doorbell need?

Most wired video doorbells want 16 to 24 VAC, and the exact figure depends on the model. Plenty of Kansas City houses built before the mid-2000s still have the original 10 or 16 VAC transformer sized for a mechanical chime that drew almost nothing, and it cannot simultaneously power video, Wi-Fi, recording and the chime. The symptom is not a dead doorbell — it is an intermittent one: it works, it drops, it comes back, and everyone blames the network. We measure the transformer output under load rather than at rest, because a tired transformer reads fine until something asks it for current. Replacing it is a small job and it fixes a surprising share of "unreliable doorbell" calls outright.

Can you fix my existing Ring, or do I have to replace it?

We can usually fix what is there, and we would rather. IntegrateIT is not a Ring dealer and has no stake in what is on your door — if the doorbell hardware is healthy, the work is the transformer, the access point placement, the SSID and band configuration, and the VLAN it lives on. Where we do recommend replacing it, the reason is specific rather than commercial: the unit cannot be reached by wire and the entry cannot be covered reliably by radio, or you want the doorbell recording to the same on-site recorder as the rest of your cameras, which a consumer cloud doorbell will not do. You will get that reason plainly, and the option of leaving it alone.

Wired PoE doorbell or wireless — which should I install?

Wire it if the house lets you. A doorbell on Power over Ethernet has no Wi-Fi dependency at all: one Cat6 run carries both power and data, so the least reliable link in the chain simply stops existing, and the video lands on your own recorder rather than in somebody else’s cloud. Ubiquiti’s UniFi Protect doorbell is the one we specify most because it sits on the same platform as the rest of the cameras and the network. Most Johnson County houses have a basement or crawlspace directly under the front entry, which is exactly what makes that cable pull a couple of hours rather than a remodel. Where the entry sits over slab with finished ceilings below and no path, wireless is the honest answer and we make the radio side right instead of pretending otherwise.

Can the doorbell show up on my Control4 touch panels?

Yes. Control4 surfaces lock state, alarm state, camera feeds and the doorbell in one app and on the in-wall panels, so the front door rings the touch panel and you answer it from the kitchen rather than hunting for a phone. It also lets the doorbell do more than ring: a press after dark can raise the entry lighting, and a doorbell event can be tied to recording on the camera covering the same approach. Crestron behaves the same way. This is the part that consumer doorbells cannot do on their own, and it is the reason to have the doorbell on the same platform as the rest of the house.
