Beside the ball, or overhead

Foresight’s units are camera-based: they photograph the club and the ball through impact and compute the flight from what they actually saw, rather than inferring it from a radar track that needs distance to develop. That is why they suit an indoor bay, where there is no distance to give them. The practical choice in a home is not really about accuracy between the two — it is about where the unit lives.

• GCQuad — beside the hitting area. Portable. It can leave the bay for a fitting or a lesson and come back. It also sits on the floor next to where you are swinging, which is fine for a dedicated room and less fine in a bay the family also walks through.
• Falcon — fixed overhead. Nothing beside the ball, nothing to move, nothing to knock. The bay stays clear and reads as part of the room. The trade is that the ceiling has to take it: real height, and a mount rigid enough that the unit does not move over a season of drivers.
• Both want the same room work. Projection geometry, a proper impact screen, turf and hitting strip, light control so the image holds up, power, and a wired network drop for the simulator PC. The unit is the part that arrives in a box.

The measurements that decide your room

Clear height under the lowest obstruction, measured across the whole swing area rather than at the tee. Depth from the screen to behind the hitting position, which sets how far the projector can throw and whether a full swing has room. Width, because a bay that fits a swing but not a follow-through is not a bay. And where the beams and duct runs land, since moving one is a general-contractor conversation and moving a screen is not.

Those numbers settle the enclosure, the projector and the mounting method before anyone opens a catalog — and they are the reason we will not quote a simulator over email. What a build involves

In order: measure and design, then any framing or structural work, then the low-voltage rough-in while the walls are open — projector feed, network drop, speaker locations, lighting control and the conduit to the rack. Then the enclosure, screen, turf and hitting strip. Then the unit is mounted and aligned, and the projection geometry is set against it. Programming and calibration happen last, once the room is finished, because you cannot set a light scene for a room you have not seen finished.

Alignment is the step that separates a bay that reads true from one that drifts. An overhead unit that is a degree out, or a mount that flexes, produces numbers that look plausible and are not — and that is worse than numbers that look obviously wrong. It is also why we would rather do the mounting than inherit it. The same logic applies to the projector pairing: throw distance, brightness and the screen have to be chosen together.

What we pair it with

• A Carl’s Place enclosure and impact screen. The combination in the Prairie Village build, and the one we reach for most.
• Architectural ceiling speakers. Sonance or Triad, so the bay has real audio without a box in the swing path.
• Lutron lighting on a scene. Light control is what makes the projected image hold up, and it is one press.
• Control4 or Crestron Home in front of it. One command starts the projector, the lighting and the simulator PC.
• A wired network drop, not Wi-Fi. The simulator PC on cable is the difference between a session and a support call.
• A dual-purpose room, when the space asks for it. Plenty of these bays are also media rooms; that combination has its own write-up.
