What overhead actually buys you

An overhead launch monitor reads the club and the ball from above the hitting area, so the floor beside you stays empty. In a dedicated room that is a nicety. In the room most people actually have — a basement bay that is also a media room, a gym, or the place the family walks through — it is the difference between a simulator you use and one you move something to use.

• Nothing to knock, nothing to reposition. The unit is fixed, so the geometry it was aligned to is the geometry it still has next month.
• The bay reads as part of the house. With the enclosure, screen and turf in and the electronics overhead, the room does not look like equipment.
• The ceiling becomes a specification. Clear height, structure to mount into, and a mounting position that does not fight the projector.
• Alignment is a build step, not an unboxing step. It is set after the room is finished, because flooring and enclosure work move the reference.

The mount is the part to be fussy about

This is the failure mode we get called about, and it is quiet. A unit mounted into drywall, or onto a bracket with any flex in it, does not stop working. It drifts. The numbers stay in a believable range and slowly stop describing your swing, and because nothing looks broken, people spend a season trusting them. That is a worse outcome than an obvious fault.

So we mount into structure, use a bracket rated for the job, align to the manufacturer’s specification, and re-check after the flooring and the enclosure are in rather than before. The measurements that decide your room

Clear height under the lowest obstruction across the whole swing area, not at the tee. Depth from the screen to behind the hitting position, which sets the projector throw and whether a full swing has room. Width, for the follow-through. And where the beams and duct runs land, because those decide where the unit and the projector can go without fighting each other.

• A Carl’s Place enclosure and impact screen. Sized to the room rather than to a catalog default.
• A wired network drop for the simulator PC. Not Wi-Fi. This is the single most common cause of a session that will not start.
• Architectural ceiling speakers. Sonance or Triad, so nothing sits in the swing path.
• Lutron lighting on a scene. Light control is what keeps the projected image honest.
• Control4 or Crestron Home in front of it. One press for the projector, the lights and the PC.
