IntegrateIT carries and installs Screen Innovations across the Kansas City metro — both halves of it: the projection screens for rooms the light gets into, and the motorised shades, including the exterior shades for a patio that faces the sunset. One precision first, because the trade is sloppy about this word: Screen Innovations is a line we carry and install under distribution, not one we hold our own dealer agreement on, so we do not call ourselves an authorized Screen Innovations dealer. What we carry and install from Screen Innovations

The screens come from Screen Innovations and the shades come from Shade Innovations, which SI calls its own shading division — one company, one order, one install crew. As with the screens, a material and a frame are two separate choices. Everything is built to order.

Screens and materials

• Black Diamond, Black Diamond Fusion, Slate and Slate AT — the ALR materials. The reason most people come to SI. These use an optic in the surface to turn away light arriving from off-axis, which is what keeps contrast in a room with a window. SI states up to 85 percent ambient-light rejection for Black Diamond Fusion and 65 percent for Slate and Slate AT; the AT version is the acoustic one, for a centre channel behind the picture.
• Short Throw — the ALR material for ultra-short-throw projectors. SI describes it as lenticular optics that reject light arriving from above, which is what makes a UST projector on a credenza work in a lit media room rather than look washed out.
• Pure, Pure AT and Solar — the white and grey materials. SI’s finer-textured surfaces for a room with proper light control; Pure AT is perforated for sound to pass through. SI does not brand these as ALR and neither do we.
• Solo 3 Indoor, Zero-G and Zero-G Pro — the retractable screens. Solo 3 Indoor is SI’s current retractable, with what SI calls CNC Tab Tension for flatness; Zero-G is the one that appears to float with no visible housing, and SI states Zero-G Pro reaches 300 inches diagonal. These are the screens for a room that has to stop being a theater when the film ends.
• Short Throw Motorized and Short Throw Lift. The ultra-short-throw screens — the Lift rises from the floor, which solves the room with a window wall and no ceiling to hide a housing in.
• Zero Edge, Fixed and 1 Fixed — the fixed frames. Zero Edge is the thin, backlit, borderless one; Fixed is the velvet-wrapped two-inch frame; 1 Fixed is the straightforward one. A fixed tensioned screen is flatter and has nothing to fail, so we specify one whenever the wall allows it.
• DT Dynamic — motorised masking. SI states the DT Dynamic 4 masks four ways across ratios from 1.33 to 2.40 to 1, so a wide film never sits inside grey bands.

Shades, indoor and exterior

• KAOS — the exterior shades. SI’s high-wind outdoor line, and the half of this brand that matters most on a Kansas City patio. Five fabrics: bug screen, clear vinyl, sunscreen, projection and security. SI publishes its wind numbers per fabric rather than per system — 110 mph against the sunscreen fabric, internally tested, and 155 mph against the security fabric, tested by Twitchell — so the fabric is the specification, not a finish choice.
• KAOS cassettes, power and control. A box cassette or a recessed pocket, ceiling, wall or pocket mounted, in nine standard powder-coat colours. SI states 120V AC hardwired power with RF control and a self-lubricating track material it calls Onyx. The hardwired part is why this belongs on the electrical plan rather than in a retrofit conversation.
• KAOS Front Projection. The outdoor projection version on the same platform — a screen that lives in the cassette until someone wants a film on the patio, rather than a screen somebody has to carry out and put away.
• Nano Box and Nano Roll — indoor. The small-cassette and open-roll shades, motorised or manual, for a house where the shade is meant to disappear into the head detail.
• Niño Roller and Niño Duo — indoor. SI’s simpler roller and duo shades for the rooms that need shading without the millwork detail.
• Pocket, SilenTrac and Revolve. A recessed pocket shade, a quiet motorised drapery track and a drapery system — for the rooms where fabric rather than a roller is what the designer has drawn.

How this gets designed in

The screen half and the shade half are the same conversation from two directions: how much light is in the room, where it comes from, and what you are willing to do about it. A shade that closes on the same press that drops the screen is worth more than a better material bought instead of it.

• Measure the light, then choose the material. ALR is a real answer to a real problem and a waste of money in a dark room. We walk the space at the hour you say you will use it, which is usually not the hour we happen to be standing there.
• Glare is geometry. Low western sun on a screen at six in the evening is barely improved by a better material and enormously improved by shade. Sometimes the answer is the KAOS shade and the screen you already have.
• Pocket details are framing. A recessed shade pocket is a drawing-stage decision. So is the blocking above an exterior opening, because an outdoor cassette carries wind load into the structure and the structure has to be ready for it.
• Power is a plan item. SI states hardwired 120V AC on KAOS, and indoor shades have their own power choices. Counting the circuits and the locations at design is the difference between a clean install and a visible cord.
• Control on the same button as everything else. SI publishes Control4 and Crestron SIMPL drivers along with RS-232, contact closure and 0-10V, so the shades and the screen become one scene. We are a Control4 Platinum Dealer with a Control4 Certified Showroom and a Crestron Elite Partner with programming done in house, so that scene is written rather than assembled from defaults.
• Then it is documented. What was set and why lands in your portal with the rest of the project record. Every install carries a five-year workmanship warranty from the final invoice; the equipment carries its manufacturer warranty.

Where Screen Innovations sits beside the other lines we carry

Against Stewart Filmscreen, which we also carry, the split is clean and we have no reason to blur it. Stewart is the built-to-order dedicated room — acoustically transparent material with the centre behind the picture, masking, a frame detailed to the architecture. Screen Innovations is the room the light gets into, and the room where the screen has to vanish afterwards. Both are honest answers to different rooms.

On shading, the comparison that matters is Lutron, and there we hold an actual dealer agreement — we are a Lutron Certified Installer and Lutron HomeWorks is the line we specify when the house wants one system carrying lighting and shades together on a single keypad. SI is the line we reach for when the requirement is the exterior opening, the recessed pocket detail, or a shade that has to match a screen already going in. And on the projector side of the screen, we carry and install JVC D-ILA and Sony SXRD laser. Where the room truly will not go dark and the image has to be enormous, neither a screen nor a shade is the answer — that is a direct-view LED wall, and we will say so.
