What a project like this involves

A network project starts with the house, not the router. The access-point count comes from the floor plan and the construction, the wired drops come from where the televisions, the rack and the office are, and the switch is sized for what will be added later.

Done this way the Wi-Fi is one name across the house and the grounds, the smart devices sit on their own lane, and the cameras and the audio never compete with the family for bandwidth.

• Networking. A wired backbone with ceiling-mounted access points placed for coverage, a managed switch, and a separate lane for the smart devices.
• Lighting control. Dimmers, keypads and scenes that set the house for morning, evening and away, replacing banks of switches.
• Distributed audio. Speakers in the ceilings and walls, zoned by room, with the amplification in the rack and one app or keypad to pick the source.
• Video. Displays in the rooms that want them, with the sources distributed from the rack so one box serves several screens.
• Control system. The layer that ties the rooms together: one app, keypads and scenes, so lighting, audio, video and shades answer to the same press.
