North Kansas City · Its own city

North Kansas City · a business district and a neighborhood, wired properly.

North Kansas City is its own municipality rather than a district of Kansas City, and the distinction matters when you are looking for someone to work here. It is a compact grid in Clay County on the north bank of the Missouri River: a working business district along Armour Road, a hospital campus, converted warehouses, and streets of early-twentieth-century houses behind them. The projects we have completed in this city are commercial ones, which is the honest shape of the work here so far.

Installing in North Kansas City

What is different about North Kansas City houses

Installing here is different because the building tells you which trade you are in before you open the door. The houses behind the business district mostly predate the war: brick and plaster, narrow stud bays, full basements, and wiring that has been added to in layers by whoever owned the place at the time. Retrofit is realistic in them, and the basement ceiling and the attic do most of the routing, but we open the panel and look at what is actually there before promising a clean path.

The converted warehouse and loft space is the opposite problem, and there is a lot of it here. Masonry walls, open ceilings and exposed structure mean there are no stud bays to hide anything in, so pathway becomes a design decision rather than an afterthought. Cable runs in conduit or a raceway chosen to look deliberate, equipment lives in a rack that was planned into the space, and the network carries far more of the system than it would in a conventional house.

Then the commercial half, which is where our completed work in this city sits. Offices, conference rooms and showrooms have to be operated by whoever walks in, not by the person who commissioned them, so the control layer is judged on whether a stranger can start a meeting without help. Access points get cabled to where the coverage is needed instead of daisy-chained from the front of the building, and when a build-out changes after the cabling is done, the fix is more wire, pulled properly, rather than a wireless bridge covering for it.

Questions from North Kansas City homeowners

Is North Kansas City the same as Kansas City, Missouri?

No. North Kansas City is a separate municipality in Clay County, north of the Missouri River, with its own city government. It is small and easy to miss on a map next to its much larger neighbor, but if you live or run a business here, this is the page for you. Kansas City, Missouri has its own page, and both are inside our normal metro service area.

Do you take commercial work in North Kansas City?

Yes, and it is what we have actually completed here: a Crestron system for a commercial client, cabled access points added across their floor, and additional wire runs pulled where the original cabling stopped short. Conference rooms, offices, showrooms and the networking underneath them are one trade for us. We are a Crestron Elite Partner with programming done in house, which is what makes a room that a visitor can operate without a manual.

Can you wire a converted loft with masonry walls and open ceilings?

Yes, and the plan is different from a house. With no stud bays, pathway is the first decision rather than the last: conduit or raceway selected to look intentional, runs coordinated with the structure that is meant to stay exposed, and a rack location chosen for airflow and access rather than convenience. We walk the space and mark the routes before quoting, because in a building like this the routing is most of the labor.

Do you cross the river for Northland work?

Routinely. North Kansas City is an ordinary drive from our Overland Park design center, and it sits inside the metro area we serve every week. Site walks are at no cost. Once a system is live, monitoring and remote support handle most issues without a truck, and when hands are needed the visit is scheduled like any other metro appointment.
