Building an outdoor entertainment space that lasts
The order the work has to happen in, and what each step prevents.
Most of what makes an outdoor system last is decided before any of it is visible. Sleeves go under the walkway before the pavers land on it. The network reaches the far corner of the yard before the first speaker does. When that sequence holds, the space still works in year five. When it does not, the fixes involve a saw.
The grill, the furniture, the fire feature and the planting belong to the landscape and hardscape trades. What follows is the layer underneath: what we ask for, when we ask for it, and the mistake each step prevents.
Kansas City gets a vote on all of it. Humid summers, ice, and a freeze-thaw cycle that goes looking for every seam.
Power and conduit, before the hardscape
The first ask on an outdoor project is cheap and boring: put conduit in the ground while the ground is still open. Sleeves under the walkway. A path from the equipment room out to the far bed. Line voltage kept away from low voltage. A weather-rated enclosure on the house with room to work inside it.
Run more than the drawing needs. An empty pipe you never use costs almost nothing. The one you wish you had costs a trench through a finished patio.
This step prevents the most expensive rework in the yard. Once the pavers are set and the beds are planted, every cable after that is either surface conduit stapled along the siding or a demolition line item.
A network that reaches the yard
Everything further down this list assumes a connection: music, camera video, the control app, shade motors, the display that decides to update itself on a Saturday evening.
Indoor Wi-Fi does not carry through masonry, glass and open air the way people expect. Coverage past the back wall usually means an access point outside or at the exterior wall, wired back on cable that went in during the previous step.
Plan the network alongside the conduit and it disappears into the design. Plan it after the first dropout and the choice is between a visible antenna on the eave and a mesh node sitting in a window.
Landscape audio, while the beds are open
Outdoor sound is a coverage problem before it is a power problem. Open air takes the energy away, so a single pair of speakers on the house wall is loud on the patio and thin at the far end of the yard.
What holds up is several small weather-rated speakers spread through the planting, playing at a level nobody has to talk over, with a buried subwoofer carrying the bottom that open air steals. Coastal Source and Sonance are the lines we reach for here, built around burial-rated cable and connectors rather than adapted from indoor parts.
Doing this while the beds are open is the entire point. Speaker cable is trivial to place in bare soil and miserable to place through mature planting.
The screen, and where the sun is
An outdoor display fights daylight in a way an indoor one never does. The weather rating decides whether it survives. Brightness and placement decide whether anyone bothers to watch it.
Walk the space at the hour it will actually be used. A wall that looks ideal in the morning can be staring into the afternoon sun. Shade, or a few degrees of turn, is worth more than anything printed on the box.
Choosing the television before choosing the wall is how a good screen ends up unwatchable for the part of the day the family is outside.
Lighting and shade, on the same control as the house
Path and step lighting for moving around, accent light on the trees and stone, something softer where people sit, something brighter where someone is cooking. Shade comes out of the same conversation: a pergola, a louvered roof, motorized screens that drop when the sun comes around.
The value is in the control more than the fixtures. One evening scene should take the yard from dinner light to after-dinner light without anyone hunting for a switch, and it should be the same system that runs the lights indoors.
Leaving outdoor lighting and shade on their own vendor apps is how a well-designed yard ends up running on a timer nobody ever adjusts.
Cameras and the perimeter
The gate, the drive, the pool, the side yard where the equipment lives. Outdoor cameras want the same three things the rest of this list wants: a wired path, power that came from the conduit, and a mounting point chosen before the soffit closes.
Cameras and lighting are better together than apart. Motion at the gate can bring the path lights up rather than only filling a clip nobody watches.
Cameras added after the exterior is finished get mounted where a cable could reach, not where the view is.
One control surface
By now the yard has audio, video, lighting, shade, cameras and probably heat. Delivered as separate apps, all of it gets used less. We plan around that.
The version people actually use is a keypad by the back door for the two or three things that happen every evening, and a phone for everything else, both running the same system as the rest of the house.
Four apps is not a control system. It is a filing cabinet.
What the winter does
Water is patient. It finds the top of an enclosure, the unsealed side of a connector, the low point in a conduit run where it can sit and wait to freeze.
So enclosures get mounted to drain and to breathe, connections face down, conduit gets a way for condensation to leave, and anything never meant to sit at winter temperatures either lives indoors or comes in. Weather-rated equipment installed carelessly still fails. The rating covers the box, not the installation.
Spring is the honest test. A system built for the freeze comes back on by itself. One built for the photograph needs a service call.
The order is most of the design
None of these steps is difficult on its own. What makes an outdoor space last is doing them in the order the yard allows, which is close to the reverse of the order people get excited about them.
Conduit, network, audio in open ground, screen, light and shade, cameras, control. Then the furniture arrives, and it looks like none of it was planned at all.

Can any of this be added to a patio that is already finished?
Usually, though the routes get creative. An old irrigation sleeve or an existing coax run sometimes gives us a path, exterior runs can follow soffit lines and downspouts where they read as part of the house, and coring through a rim joist is often easier than it sounds. How much of it is possible depends on the house, which is why we walk it before saying anything.
When should an integrator be involved in a landscape project?
At the drawing stage, alongside the landscape architect and the hardscape contractor. The only questions we need answered early are where the trenches are going and when they close. Coming in after the excavator leaves is not fatal, but it narrows what can be done without cutting into something new.
What actually fails first in an outdoor system?
Connections, not equipment. Terminations that took on water, a splice buried without a proper enclosure, an unsealed cable entry into the back of a box. Speakers and displays tend to outlive the shortcuts taken where the wire ends.
Do outdoor speakers need to come inside for the winter?
Fixed weather-rated speakers stay where they are. Portable gear, anything battery-powered, and equipment rated only for indoor temperatures should not sit out through a Kansas City winter. If you are unsure which category something falls in, the operating temperature range on its spec sheet answers it.
