Two jobs that share a page

“Access control” means two quite different projects depending on who is asking, and they get quoted differently. A business is asking about doors: who badges in, when, which doors, and what the log has to prove afterwards. A homeowner on an acreage is asking about the approach: a gate at the road, a call box, and the ability to see and talk to whoever is standing at it from the kitchen. We do both, and the parts underneath overlap more than the two conversations suggest.

Commercial — doors, badges, and a log that holds up

Readers and platform. Ubiquiti UniFi Access where the site is small or medium and already on UniFi; ISONAS Pure IP where PoE-only readers with no panel suit the building; Brivo for cloud-managed multi-site; Avigilon Alta and HID Mercury at enterprise scale. Visitor management on Envoy where reception needs it.
The door hardware is the real scope. An electric strike, or a maglock where the door cannot take one, plus a request-to-exit device, a door position contact, and — on a maglock — the fire alarm release and emergency egress hardware that turns a door into a code item rather than a wiring item.
Reader-to-controller wiring. We run OSDP over RS-485 rather than legacy Wiegand wherever the hardware supports it. Wiegand sends credential data in the clear over a cable anyone can reach behind a reader; OSDP encrypts it and tells you when a reader stops answering. On a retrofit we will tell you which one the existing readers speak before anything is ordered.
Power budget, honestly counted. Readers are PoE devices sharing a switch with cameras, access points and signage, and a maglock’s standby draw is not a reader’s. We size the switch’s PoE budget for the whole rack rather than per-device, and lock power gets its own supply with battery standby instead of being hung off a reader port.

Residential — the gate, the call box, and the panel in the kitchen

The intercom lands where you already are. The call box rings the in-wall touch panels and your phone rather than a handset in a closet. Control4 surfaces the front door on the touch panel so you answer from the kitchen — DoorBird is the intercom we specify most often, and it is a certified integration rather than custom work. Crestron behaves the same way.
We interface the gate operator you have. Most gate operators expose a dry contact or a serial port, which is all an automation system needs to open, hold or close. Replacing a healthy operator is rarely the right spend; making it answer to the house is.
Safety devices are not optional. Photo eyes and edge sensors are what stop a gate on a car or a child, and reversing loops are what keep it from closing on a vehicle still in the path. Where an existing gate is missing them, that is on the punch list before we automate anything about it.
Distance is the design problem. Cat6 carries PoE reliably to about 100 meters. Past that we place a powered mid-span at a pedestal or run fibre to a heated enclosure at the gate. The trench and conduit that carry it are usually the largest line item on the quote, which is why we walk the driveway before quoting rather than after.
Codes and events behave like the rest of the house. A gate code entering after dark can raise the drive lighting and push a notification with the camera clip attached — the same pattern as the per-person codes on the doors, applied 300 feet further out.

What it costs, and why we will not quote it by email

A door’s cost is decided by the door, not by the badge technology. The reader is the cheap part; the scope is the door’s share of the controller, an electric strike or a maglock, the request-to-exit device and the door contact. Hollow metal with conduit already in the frame is one job, a glass storefront pair with fire-release hardware is a different one, and a historic wood door that needs a new raceway is a third.

Gates and intercoms we quote after a walk, and we do not publish a range for them, because the trench length, the conduit path, the existing operator and whether power already exists at the road swamp every other variable. How much does access control cost per door in Kansas City?

Three things move it: the door itself (an existing hollow-metal door with conduit already in the frame is one job, a glass storefront pair or a historic wood door needing a new raceway is another), whether the door takes an electric strike or a maglock with its fire-release scope, and how many doors share a controller. Can a driveway gate intercom ring my Control4 touch panels and my phone?

Yes, and that is the setup we build most. The call box at the gate rings the in-wall touch panels and the app rather than a dedicated handset in a closet, so you see and speak to whoever is at the gate from the kitchen or from anywhere with signal, and you open the gate from the same screen. Control4 carries certified drivers for the mainstream intercom hardware — DoorBird is the one we specify most often, and the front door ringing the touch panel is a documented behavior of the platform rather than custom work. Crestron does the same. The gate operator itself is interfaced with a dry-contact or serial connection, so we work with the operator you already have wherever it is healthy.

Electric strike or maglock — which does my door need?

Mostly the door decides. An electric strike replaces the strike plate and lets the door keep its mechanical lock, which is the cleaner answer for a standard swinging door with a latch — it fails secure on a power loss and the door still keys open from outside. A magnetic lock is the answer for doors that cannot take a strike: glass storefront pairs, aluminum frames, doors with no usable latch. Maglocks fail unlocked by design, and that has a code consequence you cannot design around: the lock has to release on a fire alarm signal and on the request-to-exit and emergency-release devices, so a maglock door is always a bigger scope than a strike door. If somebody quotes you a maglock without mentioning fire release, get a second quote.

What has to be run to a gate at the end of a long driveway?

More than people expect, and it is the honest cost driver on estate properties. The gate needs power at the operator, a low-voltage path back to the house for the intercom and the access side, and — past about 300 feet — the copper stops being the right answer. Cat6 delivers PoE reliably to roughly 100 meters, so beyond that we either place a powered mid-span at a pedestal or run fibre with a media converter in a heated outdoor enclosure at the gate. All of it wants conduit in a trench, and the trench is usually the single biggest line on a gate quote. Where trenching is genuinely impossible, a cellular path for the intercom is a workable fallback and we will say what it costs you in reliability.

Do the cameras and the access control have to be separate systems?

No, and keeping them separate is the mistake we get called in to undo. We typically pair surveillance and access on one platform with badge-event-to-video linking, so a door event and the footage of it come up together instead of being two searches in two apps at two timestamps. That is what turns an access log into something you can actually use after an incident. Is access control work licensed in Kansas, and do you handle the permits?

We permit, install and certify the work ourselves — no second-vendor handoff, and one company owning the warranty. Licensing and permit requirements differ by jurisdiction across the metro, and we handle the filings for your address. That matters more on access control than on most low-voltage work, because a door with a maglock or an electrified lock intersects the fire alarm and life-safety requirements for that building, and coordinating that is not something to leave to whoever shows up with a reader. Every install carries a five-year workmanship warranty. The equipment carries its manufacturer warranty. And you have our support for as long as you own the system.
