What moves the number within a range

How far the system reaches. The count of lighting zones, audio zones, video displays, touchscreens and keypads on the system is the number the project scales on — the platform itself is not the driver, and square footage is only a proxy for it.
New construction vs retrofit. New-construction wiring costs far less than retrofitting into a finished home — we're running cable before drywall, not pulling it through finished walls.
