Derby · Wichita metro

Derby · full-stack smart homes south of Wichita.

Derby lies just south of Wichita along the Arkansas River, the largest of the Sedgwick County suburbs and a steadily growing one. Its housing is mostly postwar through present-day suburban construction, with a solid stock of newer two-story builds on comfortable lots and established neighborhoods closer to the older center of town. Basements are common, and lots are large enough that outdoor space is part of the brief. Derby sits several hours west of our Overland Park design center, so we serve it on scheduled Wichita-area trips.

Installing in Derby

What is different about Derby houses

Installing here is different because the work is planned in blocks rather than in short visits. We design, procure and program before we travel, so on-site days are installation and calibration instead of discovery, and a project moves through in a concentrated stretch. That rewards a thorough site walk up front. It also means the system gets built to be supported remotely, with monitoring in place so a problem is diagnosed from the office rather than waiting on a windshield.

The newer housing gives us room to do it properly. Derby's recent builds have basements, open main floors and enough structure to place cable well, so a pre-wire during framing covers displays, ceiling speakers, keypads, access points and camera drops for a fraction of retrofit cost. In finished houses, standard framing and an accessible basement make retrofit routing predictable, which keeps a remote project from turning into a series of surprises.

Third, Kansas weather sets the outdoor specification the same way it does at home. Patios and pool areas here take full sun, hard freezes and the occasional severe storm, so outdoor displays and speakers get chosen for that rather than borrowed from an indoor line, and the cable goes in conduit. Lawns are large, so outdoor coverage means a cabled access point aimed at the yard, not a router hoping to reach the back fence.

Questions from Derby homeowners

You are in Overland Park. How do you cover Derby?

On scheduled trips to the Wichita area, planned so the install runs as one concentrated block rather than in fragments. Everything possible is designed, staged and set up before we travel. After the system is live, monitoring and remote support handle the majority of what comes up, and anything needing hands is folded into the next scheduled trip.

Does a remote install mean we get less attention?

It means the planning is more thorough, not less. Daniel designs the system and walks the project, and the crew is ours rather than subcontracted. The site walk carries more weight because we cannot improvise on the day, so we document the house carefully first. The warranty and support commitment is the same one every client gets.

What is the best thing to do first in a newer Derby house?

Fix the network before anything else. Builder-supplied equipment rarely covers a two-story house with a basement and a large yard, and every other system you add will lean on it. Once there is a cabled network with access points placed by floor plan, lighting control, audio and cameras all behave the way they are supposed to.
