The bluffs above the Missouri River define Parkville. This Platte County town keeps a compact nineteenth-century downtown along the riverfront and the Park University campus on the hill, while newer estate developments spread across the wooded ridges north and west of it. That gives us two very different jobs in one municipality: careful retrofits in century-old frame houses, and full pre-wires in large new homes on steep, treed lots. It is a drive north across the river from our Overland Park design center.

What is different about Parkville houses
Installing here is different because the topography decides the network. Houses on the bluffs are tall and narrow or spread across a walkout grade, with the lower level cut into the hillside and the yard falling away behind it. A single access point centered on a floor plan misses half of that. We cable points by level rather than by footprint, pay attention to the walkout and the deck, and treat the driveway coming up from the road as its own coverage and camera problem.
The older housing near downtown is genuine retrofit work. Frame construction with narrow stud bays, added-on rooms and basements that were finished decades ago mean the clean cable path is rarely the obvious one. We route through the basement joists and the attic, keep penetrations where trim will cover them, and use wireless lighting control in the rooms where a run would mean cutting into plaster or original woodwork. What can be concealed gets stated before the proposal is signed.
Third, the new estates on the ridge are where the pre-wire pays. These are large houses, often with a finished lower level, a covered outdoor living space and a long run from the equipment room to the far end. Getting in during framing means cable to every future display, ceiling speakers where the furniture will actually sit, conduit for the outdoor zones, and an equipment room with power and ventilation instead of a hot closet under the stairs.

Our equipment rack is in a closet that gets hot. Can it be moved?
- Usually yes, and it is worth doing. Heat is the main thing that shortens the life of networking and AV gear, and a sealed closet under a stair traps it. We look at where cable can be extended or re-terminated, find a spot with airflow and access, and move the gear there. It also makes every future service call faster and quieter.
Do you cross the river for Platte County work?
- Regularly. Parkville is part of our normal Kansas City service area and we have worked in town. Site walks are no-cost and scheduled directly, and most post-install support is handled remotely so a drive is not needed for routine questions. When a truck is required, it is booked like any other metro call.
We have a walkout on a steep lot and the Wi-Fi drops downstairs. Why?
- Because a walkout is partly underground and partly not, and the signal from a floor above has to fight both the framing and the grade. The fix is a cabled access point on the lower level rather than an extender upstairs. Once that is in, the walkout, the deck and the yard behind the house all hold a steady connection.
Can an older downtown house get lighting control without opening the walls?
- In most rooms, yes. Wireless Lutron controls replace existing switches without new wiring, which works well in a house with narrow stud bays and original trim. Where a wired run is easy, we do it wired. We walk the house first and tell you which rooms take which approach, so nothing gets discovered mid-project.
