What calibration actually is

Every piece of equipment in a theater ships with assumptions, and none of them are about your room. The processor assumes distances and levels it was never told. The projector assumes a bright showroom and a viewer who wants to be impressed in thirty seconds. The speakers assume a crossover point somebody typed once. Calibration is the work of replacing those assumptions with measurements taken in the room, from the seats people actually sit in.

It is not tone controls, and it is not preference. The target is the standard the content was mastered against, so that the film looks and sounds like the thing the people who made it signed off on. That is a checkable claim rather than a matter of taste, which is why the visit begins and ends with a measurement and why you should always be shown both.

It is also the cheapest meaningful improvement available to most rooms we walk into. A well-specified system set up on defaults and a modest system calibrated properly is not a close contest, and the second one costs a fraction of what people spend trying to buy their way out of the first.

The video half

Order matters here, because several of these interact and doing them in the wrong sequence means doing them twice.

  • The physical setup, for a projector. Throw distance and lens position, focus checked across the whole screen rather than at the centre, geometry squared so the image is a rectangle, and the picture sized to the screen so no light spills onto the wall around it. None of the electronic work is worth doing until the picture is actually landing where it should, and this is the step most often skipped because it is the one that requires a ladder.
  • Brightness and black level. Set so shadow detail survives without the black floor lifting to grey. In a dedicated dark room this is a different setting from the same projector in a room with windows, which is why those are two presets and not one compromise.
  • Contrast and peak white. As much as the display or projector can hold without clipping the top end and losing the detail inside bright highlights.
  • Gamma. The curve joining those two ends, and where most of the perceived depth in an image lives. A room with any ambient light wants a different curve from a blacked-out cinema.
  • White balance. Grey made actually grey across the whole range rather than drifting blue at the top and warm at the bottom. This is the single change most people notice as “it looks like film now.”
  • Colour. Brought to the standard the content targets rather than to the vivid preset the box shipped in — and for high dynamic range material, checking how the display maps a brighter master onto what it can actually produce.
  • The screen it is throwing at. Screen gain, the material, and whether it is perforated acoustically transparent all change the measured result, so the screen is part of the calibration rather than a surface the calibration happens in front of. A projector calibrated against the wrong assumption about the material is a projector calibrated wrong.

The audio half

Levels and distances first. Every channel is matched in level from the main listening position and checked at the worst seat in the room, and every distance is entered as the processor needs it rather than as a tape measure to the nearest wall. This is where the single most common complaint in a theater comes from: dialogue you cannot hear in a system that is plenty loud, because dialogue lives almost entirely in the centre channel and the centre was never levelled against left and right.

Then crossovers. Each speaker hands off to the subwoofer at a frequency it can actually support, which is a property of that speaker in that position rather than a number that applies to a room. In-ceiling and in-wall speakers in particular are routinely left at a default that asks them for bass they were never going to produce.

Then the subwoofers, which are a placement problem before they are a settings problem. A single subwoofer in the corner that felt tidiest excites the room’s modes hard and leaves one seat booming while another goes thin. Moving it and measuring again is free. A second subwoofer placed by measurement sums more evenly across the whole seating area than one larger one ever will. Phase and time alignment between the subwoofers and the main speakers come last, and they are audible as the difference between bass that lands with the picture and bass that arrives just after it.

Then, and only then, room correction. It is a measurement-driven filter inside the processor, and it is excellent at trimming what the room adds and incapable of restoring what the room cancels. Run it before the physical work and it spends its budget fighting problems that placement would have solved for nothing. The engines we use are the ones built into the processors we carry and install — the optimiser inside Trinnov, Dirac Live inside NAD Electronics. Both are lines we carry and install under distribution rather than ones we hold our own dealer agreement on, and a correction engine is a reason to choose a processor, not a substitute for treating the room.

Where the room itself is the fault rather than the settings — boomy bass that no amount of correction tidies, dialogue smeared by early reflections off bare side walls — the lever is treatment, and that is its own project. If the room runs a Dolby Atmos layout, the overhead channels get the same treatment as every other channel and are usually the ones furthest out of level when we arrive, because they are the hardest to check by ear.

When a theater needs it

  • At commissioning. The calibration that ends a build, done after the seating and the acoustic treatment are in and the speakers are in their final positions. Calibrating a room before the seats land measures a room that will not exist by the time you use it, and the seats are not a detail: they are large, soft, and exactly where the measurements are taken.
  • After a lamp or laser change. A replaced projector lamp starts a new life at a different brightness and colour temperature, and a laser light source drifts slowly over its life. Slowly is the problem — nobody notices a gradual shift, so it is found by measuring rather than by watching.
  • After the room changes. New seating, a rug taken up, curtains added, a bookcase against the side wall, speakers nudged during a paint job. The calibration described a room, and the room is different now. This is the trigger people least expect and the one we see most.
  • After an equipment or firmware change. A replaced processor, a receiver swapped, a firmware update that resets a stored profile, or a new source that negotiates a different picture mode. Anything that owns the settings can lose them.

Outside those four, a properly commissioned room does not need an annual visit, and we will say so. There is a real service relationship worth having — ours is described on our service plans page — but a recurring calibration nobody needs is not what makes it worth having.

Theaters we did not install

A large share of this work is in rooms another company built, and we treat that as ordinary rather than awkward. There is no requirement that we installed it, no requirement that you buy anything, and no version of the visit where the answer is a rebuild you did not ask about. Plenty of the rooms we are called into were specified well and commissioned badly, and the gap between what they cost and what they do is entirely in the settings.

The same five findings come up again and again: a centre channel sitting several decibels below left and right; distances typed from a tape measure to the wrong reference point; a crossover left at a default the speaker cannot support; one subwoofer in the tidiest corner rather than in the place the room prefers; and a correction pass run once during setup, before the furniture arrived, and never re-run. None of those is a hardware fault, and none is expensive to fix.

When the fault is in the signal chain rather than the settings — no picture, an HDMI handshake that used to work, a source that drops out when the projector wakes — that is diagnosis rather than calibration, and it is on our home theater repair page. When the room belongs to a whole system nobody services any more, it usually belongs with a full system takeover instead. We will tell you which of the three you have before quoting any of them.

The certificate we do not claim

Calibration is a field with well-known training programmes, and a lot of pages in this industry imply one without ever quite claiming it. We hold four credentials and they are all checkable with the manufacturer or the association: Control4 Platinum Dealer with a Control4 Certified Showroom, Crestron Elite Partner, Lutron Certified Installer, CEDIA member. None of them is a calibration certificate, and we are not going to describe ourselves as certified calibrators because we are not.

What we offer instead is the thing a certificate is a proxy for. You get the procedure before we start, the measurements from before and after the work, and the settings written down — per-channel levels, distances, crossovers, the correction result, and the picture settings by input and by preset — so that the next person who touches the room, us or anyone else, can see what was done and why. Then judge it the way you would judge any other work: on the before and after, and on whether the room holds up on material you know well.

Will you calibrate a theater another company installed?

When does a theater need calibrating, and how often?

At commissioning, and then whenever something the calibration assumed has changed. Four triggers cover nearly every call. First, commissioning: the calibration that ends a build, done after the seating and the acoustic treatment are in. Second, a light-source change — a projector lamp replaced, or a laser light source that has aged enough to shift brightness and colour; the picture drifts slowly enough that nobody notices until it is measured. Third, a room change: new seating, a rug, curtains, a bookcase, or speakers moved even slightly all change what the room does to the sound. Fourth, an equipment or firmware change that resets or replaces the thing holding the settings. Outside of those, a well-commissioned room does not need an annual visit, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a subscription to one.

What actually changes in a video calibration?

Six things, in roughly this order. Brightness and black level, set so shadow detail exists without the black floor turning grey in a dark room. Contrast and peak white, set to what the display or projector can hold without clipping. Gamma, the curve between those two ends, which is where most of the depth in an image lives. White balance, so grey is actually grey rather than blue or pink across the range. Colour, brought to the standard the content was mastered against rather than to the vivid preset the box shipped in. And for projectors, the physical work that has to come first: throw distance and lens position, focus across the whole screen rather than the centre, geometry squared to the frame, and the picture sized to the screen so no light is spilling onto the wall. We also set the room up honestly — a picture calibrated for a dark dedicated room is the wrong picture for a family room with three windows, and those are two different presets.

What does room correction do, and what can it not do?

Room correction is a measurement-driven filter running inside the processor, and it is very good at one thing and useless at another. It can trim the peaks a room creates, align the timing between the subwoofers and the main speakers, and even out the differences between channels. It cannot fill in a null — a frequency the room cancels at a given seat is not there to boost, and asking the amplifier to try just wastes headroom and heat. That is why the order of operations is physical first: place the speakers and the subwoofers properly, treat the surfaces doing the most damage, and only then run correction on what is left. The engines we use are the ones built into the processors we carry and install — the optimiser inside Trinnov, Dirac Live inside NAD Electronics — and they earn their keep at the end of the process, not in place of it.
