Why a projector says “no signal” and the fix order we work

The classic version of this call: everything works until the receiver switches inputs, and then the projector goes to a no-signal screen — sometimes recovering on its own, sometimes only after everything is power-cycled in the right order. It reads like a broken projector. It almost never is. Switching an input tears down a protected video link and rebuilds it, and every device in the chain has to agree again. Here are the fault classes, in the order we actually work them.

  • 1. Reproduce and characterize it first. Which sources trigger it, which inputs, cold start versus warm, whether audio survives when the picture does not, whether it recovers on its own. A fault that appears on one source at one resolution is a different problem from one that appears on all of them — and this step is what stops the guess-and-swap cycle that costs owners the most money.
  • 2. The physical layer. Link and sync at every hop, terminations, and run length. HDBaseT carries 4K HDR over a single Cat6 or Cat6A cable up to about 330 feet — inside that spec it is the workhorse of KC luxury homes, and beyond it, or through a marginal termination, it fails intermittently and fails worse as bandwidth goes up. We bypass the chain to a direct connection to prove where the loss is before touching a setting.
  • 3. EDID negotiation. The projector publishes what formats and bandwidth it accepts; the sources read that table through whatever is switching, and the switch decides what to present. Present the wrong one and a source happily outputs a format the projector will never lock onto. Reading the EDID as actually presented at each stage — not as the spec sheet claims — is where a lot of “no signal” resolves.
  • 4. HDCP across the switched chain. Copy protection re-keys on every switch, across every device in the path. One device that fails to re-key drops the picture, and because audio and video can take separate paths, you get the tell-tale symptom of sound with a black screen or the reverse. Chains get long in a distributed house — source, matrix, extender, receiver, display — and every additional link is another place the handshake can fail.
  • 5. Firmware, then programming. Only once the signal path is proven do we look at what changed in software: a receiver or processor firmware update that reset input assignments, a source that renegotiates its output on wake, or a control macro still driving a device that was replaced last year. The reason this is last is that changing settings on an unproven signal path is how a one-visit fault becomes a three-visit one.

The same vocabulary governs whole-home distribution — the difference between an HDMI matrix, HDBaseT and AVoIP video distribution decides how long that chain is and how many places it can break.

What else fails in a theater at year five

  • The light engine, gradually. Projector output declines over the engine’s rated life, slowly enough that owners notice only in comparison — and several cheaper faults mimic it, so it gets ruled in, not assumed.
  • Receiver and processor firmware. Updates reset input assignments, room-correction profiles and speaker configuration more often than anyone admits. A room that sounded right in March and thin in April usually had its calibration wiped, not its speakers fail.
  • Undocumented programming. The one-button Movie scene touches five devices. Written once, never documented, it breaks the moment any one of them is replaced — and a new integrator opening a project file full of uncommented conditional logic spends forensic hours where the change should take minutes. It is one of the two failure modes behind most “my system stopped working” calls, and it is worth reading about before you get a quote.
  • The network the room quietly depends on. Streaming sources, app-based control and the processor itself all ride it. A network sized for a much smaller device count starts dropping and re-finding devices, and the theater is where you notice first — it is the room with the least tolerance for a hiccup. That is the other big failure mode, and it is a separate, fixable project.
  • Acoustics that were never addressed. A room that sounds boomy or indistinct at reference volume is frequently not a speaker problem. Treatment and calibration are the levers, and both are far cheaper than new speakers — the treatment approach we design to is on the installation page.

Repair, recalibrate, or rebuild?

Three different conversations, and the audit decides which one you are in.

  • Repair when the room is right and a link in the chain is not — a termination, an extender, a failed amplifier channel, a source that no longer plays nicely with the switch. Bounded work with a definite end.
  • Recalibrate when everything technically functions but the room does not deliver. Levels, distances, crossovers, room correction, display setup for the actual screen and throw, and a control layer that behaves the same way twice. This is the highest return per dollar in the whole category, and a surprising number of rooms have never had it done.
  • Rebuild when the equipment generation, the room, or both have been outrun. A media room, a dedicated theater and a reference-grade custom room are three different projects, and a rebuild is priced like a new build rather than like a repair — what drives the cost of a home theater walks through what moves the number.

If the room is part of a system nobody services any more, it belongs with a full system takeover; if the space is a family room rather than a dedicated theater, start with media rooms.

Common questions

Why does my projector lose signal when I switch inputs?

Because switching an input tears down a protected video link and rebuilds it, and every device in the chain has to agree again — source, receiver or matrix, any extender, and the projector. Four fault classes cover nearly all of it. (1) HDCP: the copy-protection handshake has to re-key across the whole chain on every switch, and one device that fails to re-key drops the picture, sometimes with audio still playing. (2) EDID: the projector’s capability table is read by the sources through the switch, and if the switch presents a stale, default or mismatched EDID, a source will output a format the projector cannot lock onto. (3) Sync loss on the extender: 4K HDR over a single Cat6 or Cat6A run is a bandwidth-hungry link, and a marginal termination or a run past spec fails intermittently, worse at higher bandwidth. (4) A source renegotiating on wake: a streamer or console that changes its output format when it wakes or toggles HDR forces the whole chain to handshake again at the worst moment. We work them in that order, physical layer first.

My universal remote stopped working after the cable box changed — who reprograms remotes in Overland Park?

We do, and it is usually a short visit. When a source is swapped, the control system is still sending commands to the device it was programmed for: the new box has different command codes, a different input on the receiver, or a different startup behavior, so the macro that used to turn everything on now half-works. The fix is to re-map the device in the control system, rebuild the activity or scene around it, and re-test every path — not to buy a new remote. On a Control4 or Crestron system this is a programming change; on a third-party universal remote it is a re-map of the device profile. Either way it is worth doing properly, because a remote that only half-works is the reason we most often find a good theater has stopped getting used.

Can anyone recalibrate a home theater that already exists in Kansas City?

Yes, and it is often the smallest job that makes the biggest difference. Recalibration means measuring the room as built rather than as drawn: running a sweep to set speaker levels, distances, crossovers and room correction, then setting the display for the actual screen, throw and ambient light. Rooms drift — furniture moves, speakers get bumped, firmware resets a processor to defaults, a source changes its output. Plenty of theaters we are called to “repair” were never calibrated in the first place; they were wired, powered on, and handed over. Calibration, on-site training and full owner’s documentation are part of every handover we do.

The picture is dimmer than it used to be. Is that the projector?

Possibly, but rule out the cheap causes first. Light output declines gradually over the engine’s rated life — real, but slow enough that owners usually notice only in comparison. The things that mimic it: a picture mode that got changed, an HDR tone-mapping mismatch between source and projector, a clogged filter or blocked airflow, a damaged screen surface, and ambient light that crept up because a blackout shade stopped working. If the engine really is at end of life, the honest question is whether to service that projector or put the money toward the generation that replaced it.

Do you fix theaters you did not install?

That is most of this work. Any theater we take on starts with a paid on-site audit that maps what is actually installed — sources, switching, extenders, amplification, speakers, screen, control system, network, and how they are wired — because pricing an inherited room from a phone call is guesswork. You own that documentation whether or not you hire us further. Where the room turns out to be part of a larger orphaned system, it folds into a full system takeover instead of a one-off repair.

What does a home theater repair cost in Kansas City?

It depends on what the room turns out to need: one failed link in the signal chain, a control system that has to be rebuilt, or a calibration that was never done in the first place.
