What a rack is actually for
A structured wiring rack is where every wire in the house comes to an end and every system in the house starts. In a typical Leawood or Mission Hills project it holds the internet gateway, the managed PoE switching that powers the access points and cameras and door readers, the patch panels those runs land on, the camera recorder, the video distribution for the televisions, the Control4 controller, and — where the house has one — the Lutron processor. Amplifiers for the whole-house audio usually live there too, and they are the part that generates most of the heat.
Which means the rack is a single point of failure by design. That is not a flaw — it is the price of having one place to go — but it does set the standard: everything about how the rack is built should be aimed at making failure rare and diagnosis fast. Most of what follows is that idea applied one decision at a time.
Sizing, location, and the heat problem nobody plans for
Size the rack for the gear list plus about a third again. Every project grows between design and handover — a camera gets added, an outbuilding gets a switch, somebody decides they want the golf simulator wired properly — and a rack with no spare units pushes that growth onto a shelf on the floor, which is where clean racks go to die.
Heat is the constraint people discover late. A loaded residential rack is a small space heater running twenty-four hours a day, and a sealed closet with a solid door has no way to reject that. The failure it produces is not dramatic — nothing catches fire — it is a slow shortening of the life of every power supply, and then a summer of intermittent faults that nobody connects to the closet because they happen in the afternoon. The fixes are ordinary: a vented or louvered door, an exhaust path that leaves the closet rather than circulating inside it, active fans where the load justifies them, and a layout that puts the hot equipment high and does not feed one device’s exhaust into the next device’s intake. On a large system we would rather condition the closet outright.
Location. Conditioned, ventilated, accessible, and not under a bathroom. A basement mechanical room or a dedicated closet off the mudroom is ideal. An attic is the worst common choice in this climate — Johnson County attics get punishingly hot in July and cold enough in January to condense on cold metal — and an uninsulated garage is second worst for the same reason. Leave room to work: either enough clearance to walk behind the rack, or a swing-out frame that lets one person reach the back without dismantling anything.
Power: dedicated circuit, UPS, and sequencing
The rack gets its own circuit. Sharing one with a garage freezer or a workshop outlet is how a system acquires a mystery: something trips, the house is fine, the network is not, and the correlation takes months to spot.
The UPS does two separate jobs and should be sized for both. Most outages here are blinks — a few seconds — and without a UPS every blink reboots the gateway, the switches, the recorder and the control processor simultaneously and in an arbitrary order, which is why so many “the system came back wrong” calls trace to weather rather than to hardware. A UPS turns those into a non-event. On a genuinely long outage it buys an orderly shutdown instead of a hard one. Sequencing matters on the way back up. Gear that expects the network to exist should not boot before the switch that provides it. Staged power-on — gateway and switching first, then recorders and processors, then endpoints — is a few minutes of configuration that removes an entire category of after-outage phone calls. It is also what separates a rack that recovers by itself from one that needs a person.
Termination, labeling, and the documentation nobody gets
Every run terminates on a patch panel, not directly into a switch. It costs a little more in parts and it is the difference between changing a device in five minutes and changing it in an afternoon. Cat6A is terminated and certified to TIA-568, and the certification results are part of the handover — a run that passes a tester on the day it was pulled is a run nobody has to argue about in year four.
- Labels on both ends, to one scheme. The administration standard for this is ANSI/TIA-606, and the specific scheme matters far less than using the same one at the wall plate, at the patch panel and on the port map. An unlabeled panel is a rack you can look at but not work on.
- Service loops. Enough slack coiled behind the panel that it can be pulled forward and re-terminated without pulling new cable. This is the omission we find most often in remediation work.
- Bend radius. Twisted-pair copper has a minimum bend radius — the common rule for four-pair cable is four times its outside diameter — and violating it changes the electrical characteristics of the pair. The symptom is not a dead run; it is a run that certifies marginally, works, and then fails intermittently when the closet warms up.
- Separation from power. Line-voltage and low-voltage keep their distance and cross at right angles where they must cross at all.
- Spare capacity, planned. Spare rack units, spare panel ports, spare PoE budget. A 24-port switch does not power 24 PoE devices — the power budget is a number you size in advance, not one you discover when the last camera goes in.
- An as-built. Port map, VLAN assignments, IP scheme, equipment list with firmware versions, and photographs. This is the deliverable that makes the next technician cheap, and it is the one most often skipped.
New build, or fixing what is already there
During construction the rack is cheap, because every decision is still free. We place the panel, size and locate the closet, get the dedicated circuit onto the electrical plan, and leave conduit toward the places nobody has decided about yet. That work happens in the framing window covered on the new-construction low-voltage page, and the economics are stark: wire pulled during framing is inexpensive, while the same run pulled after drywall becomes a fishing job through finished walls, priced for the extra labor it takes.
Remediation is the other half of this work and it follows a fixed order: map what physically exists rather than what the old drawings claim, tone and label every run, re-terminate and certify anything that fails, re-lay the rack so the heat and the cabling both make sense, add UPS and sequencing where they are missing, and hand back a port map and an as-built. What actually makes a rack "clean" — beyond it looking tidy in a photo?
Tidy is the visible half. The other half is whether the rack can be worked on and whether it will survive. A clean rack has: every run labeled identically at the jack, the patch panel and the port map; service loops left so a panel can be pulled forward without unterminating anything; bend radius respected, because a sharply kinked Cat6A run fails its certification test and then fails intermittently for years; heat-producing gear placed where its exhaust does not feed the intake of the device above it; power on a dedicated circuit through a UPS; and spare rack units and spare panel ports left for the equipment nobody has bought yet. A rack that photographs well and cooks itself in August is not clean.
How big should the rack be, and where should it go?
Size it for what goes in plus roughly a third again for growth — the gear list is always longer at the end of a build than at the start, and a rack with no spare units forces the next addition onto a shelf on the floor. Location matters more than size. The rack wants conditioned, ventilated space with a floor drain nowhere near it and room to walk behind or swing it out: a basement mechanical room, a dedicated closet off the mudroom, or a purpose-built AV closet. What it does not want is an attic or an uninsulated garage — Kansas City attics run brutally hot in July and cold enough in January to condense, and both ends of that swing shorten the life of every power supply in the rack.
Does a home network rack need a UPS, and how big?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest reliability upgrades in the house. Size it for two jobs rather than one. The first is riding through the short blinks — most Kansas City outages are seconds long, and a UPS turns those into nothing at all instead of into a gateway, a switch, a recorder and a control processor all rebooting in an unpredictable order. The second is an orderly shutdown on a long outage. Put the gateway, the switching, the recorder and the control processor on it. Can you clean up and re-terminate the rack another installer left behind?
That is a large share of this work. The usual pattern is a closet where runs were pulled and jammed into a panel with no labels, no test results and no documentation, and where every subsequent change was made by adding rather than by correcting. Remediation is: map what physically exists, tone and label every run, re-terminate and certify what fails, re-lay the rack so the heat and the cabling both make sense, add UPS and sequencing if they are missing, and hand back a port map and an as-built. It is unglamorous and it is the work that makes everything after it cheap instead of expensive.
Is it cheaper to do the rack during construction?
Substantially, and it is not a subtle difference. During framing, a structured wiring run is inexpensive — another cable pulled by the same crew, on the same trip, while the walls are already open. After drywall, that same run becomes a fishing job through finished walls, and the gap applies to the rack too, because the rack is where all of those runs land. During framing we place the panel, size the closet, pull the dedicated circuit and leave conduit for what has not been decided yet. After drywall, every one of those decisions is a compromise negotiated with a wall.
What does a rack build cost in Kansas City?
It depends on what goes in the rack, whether it is a new build during framing or a remediation of an existing closet, and how much of the cabling already terminates cleanly versus needs to be re-pulled or re-certified.
