Below: why zone count is the wrong starting point, how we handle the open floor plans in Overland Park homes, and the difference between a Sonos setup and a full architectural audio system.
Zone count is the wrong starting point
Whole-home audio conversations tend to begin with a number: how many rooms, how many speakers, how many zones. That number is the least useful part of the design. What determines whether a system works is where people stand, what they want to hear, and how the sound should behave in that specific space. A kitchen, a great room, and a hearth area might be one continuous open space, but the person cooking wants a different volume and source than the person watching television twelve feet away.
We design the zone map around those listening positions rather than room boundaries. Sometimes the right answer is one zone with speakers laid out to cover the entire open area evenly. Sometimes it is three distinct zones that will bleed into each other slightly, which is an acceptable trade-off for having independent control. Getting that map right is the heart of the design work, and it is why we walk the house before we quote.
The architecture above the speakers matters just as much. A matrix amplifier takes several sources and routes any of them to any zone with its own volume, equalization, and source selection. This is the difference between a system that is a collection of separate speakers and a system that is a single, coherent audio environment for the whole house.
- Zone map by listening position. Zones defined by where people stand and what they want to hear, not by room walls.
- Matrix amplification. One amplifier bank routes any source to any zone with independent volume and EQ.
- Source routing. Television feeds, turntables, and doorbell chimes become routable audio sources, not just apps.
The Overland Park floor plan factor
Overland Park houses, particularly in newer Blue Valley construction, often feature large, open floor plans. The kitchen, dining, and living areas flow into one another with no doors or walls to separate them. This is great for socializing but challenging for audio, because sound travels freely in these spaces. A speaker aimed at the kitchen will be heard in the living room, and a speaker aimed at the living room will be heard in the kitchen.
We address this by designing the speaker layout to cover the entire open area evenly, or by creating distinct zones that accept a small amount of bleed. The goal is to ensure that the person in the kitchen can hear their podcast clearly without the person in the living room being drowned out by it. This requires careful attention to speaker placement, amplifier power, and equalization, which is why we calibrate every system after the finishes are in and the furniture is placed.
In older homes north of I-435, the floor plans are often more compartmentalized, with distinct rooms and hallways. This makes zoning easier in some ways, but the challenge shifts to ensuring that the audio in one room does not bleed into another through the walls. We use the same architectural approach: matrix amplification, careful speaker selection, and calibration to ensure that each zone is distinct and clear.
Sonos, Control4, and the control layer
We are an authorized Sonos dealer, and Sonos is an excellent source for a few rooms. For a small number of zones, a Sonos setup with an amplifier and a pair of in-ceiling speakers per zone is a fine answer. It is controlled from one app, and it is easy to use. However, whole-house audio is the architecture above that: a matrix amplifier that takes several sources and routes any of them to any zone with its own volume, equalization, and source.
The practical difference shows up in three places. First, cost per zone stops rising the same way past roughly six or eight zones. Second, sources that are not apps—a television feed, a doorbell chime, a turntable, a microphone—become routable. Third, the whole thing lands on one control layer with the lighting and shades, rather than in a separate app. Below about six zones, per-room amplifiers are usually the better buy, and we will say so.
The integration is what separates music in every room from a house that responds to how you live. A Goodnight press silences every zone but the primary suite and takes that one down. A Movie press steps the whole-house audio back so the theater is not competing with the kitchen. An Away press mutes the patio so the neighbors are not listening to your music after you leave. The same pattern works on Lutron, Control4, and Crestron scenes, and with Josh.ai where the household wants to ask for music by name rather than find a keypad.
Control4, Crestron and Lutron in Overland Park
IntegrateIT is a Control4 Platinum Dealer with a Control4 Certified Showroom, a Crestron Elite Partner and a Lutron Certified Installer, so the platform is chosen for the house rather than for the dealer. Here is what each one does for whole-home audio installation in Overland Park.
Control4
Control4 is the control layer that makes whole-home audio feel like one system: pick a source on a keypad, a touch panel or the app, and send it to the kitchen, the patio or every room at once. Triad in-ceiling speakers on a matrix suit whole-house work, and Sonos zones join the same Control4 app where an Overland Park family already owns players and wants to keep them.
How Control4 worksCrestron
Crestron handles whole-home audio as part of a custom build: a Sonnex audio DSP and Crestron amplifiers in one rack, every zone tuned to its room, and source selection on architectural touch panels. It suits a larger Overland Park house where the audio plan reaches a theater, a lower-level bar and an outdoor kitchen, and the programming that ties them together is written in house.
How Crestron worksLutron
Lutron joins the audio through scenes. A Dinner scene can bring the dining room lights down as the music comes up in the same room, and a patio scene at dusk can start the outdoor audio with the landscape lighting. Lutron runs the light and the shades; Control4 or Crestron carries the audio and calls both together.

What we have actually built in Overland Park
Real, and in this city: a whole-home audio project completed for a residence in Overland Park. We are describing it in scope terms rather than naming the household, which is how every project on this site is handled unless the client has agreed to be named. We are an authorized Sonos dealer and an authorized Sonance dealer (James by Sonance under the Sonance agreement). The design center is on Glenwood Avenue, so a service call in this city is a short drive rather than a scheduled trip across the metro.
Nearby: we work throughout Overland Park — Nottingham Forest, Wilshire Farms, Stanley Heights, Stonegate Reserve, Sundance Ridge and Summerfield included — from the design center at 15108 Glenwood Ave in Overland Park.
Overland Park questions
Who installs Sonos and whole-house audio in Overland Park?
IntegrateIT is an authorized Sonos dealer and installs whole-house audio systems across the Kansas City metro, including Overland Park. We integrate Sonos zones into Control4 and Crestron systems, or we design standalone Sonos setups for smaller homes. We are also an authorized Sonance dealer, so we can specify architectural speakers that are finished behind drywall. Call (913) 804-7575 to discuss your project.
How much does whole-home audio cost in Overland Park?
It depends on zone count, the speaker tier in each zone, and whether the walls are open or finished. Eight zones is a different project from twenty-four, and one reference listening room can cost more than a dozen ordinary zones. A no-cost site walk produces one fixed written price rather than a range by email. See our whole-home audio cost guide for more details.
Do you install Sonos in Overland Park?
Yes, we are an authorized Sonos dealer. We install Sonos zones in Overland Park homes, integrating them into Control4 and Crestron systems or setting them up as standalone systems. We also install Sonance and Wisdom Audio speakers, so we can design a system that uses the right speaker tier for each zone.
What is the difference between Sonos and a whole-house audio system?
Sonos is a source and a fine answer for a few rooms. A whole-house audio system is the architecture above that: a matrix amplifier that takes several sources and routes any of them to any zone with its own volume, equalization, and source. The practical difference is that cost per zone stops rising the same way past roughly six or eight zones, and sources that are not apps become routable.
Can I control my audio with my lights and shades?
Yes, that is how we set it up. Audio appears in the Control4 or Crestron interface alongside lighting, shades, and the rest. The same pattern works on Lutron scenes, and with Josh.ai where the household wants to ask for music by name rather than find a keypad.
Do you handle outdoor audio in Overland Park?
Yes, we are an authorized Coastal Source dealer. We design and install outdoor audio systems in Overland Park, including bollards, in-ground speakers, and buried cable. The outdoor design—bollards versus satellites, buried subwoofers, and trenching a finished yard—lives on the outdoor audio page rather than being repeated here.
Should my Overland Park whole-home audio run on Sonos or Control4?
Both can work together. IntegrateIT keeps the Sonos players an Overland Park family already owns and brings those zones into the Control4 app, or designs a new system on Triad in-ceiling speakers and a matrix controlled by Control4, so every room picks its source from the same keypads. For a custom build with a theater and outdoor zones, Crestron runs the audio as one system. Daniel walks the house at no cost, and the proposal is one fixed price.
