The rack is the part nobody thinks about and everybody lives with. Here it almost always belongs in the mechanical room on the lower level: cool, central, and reachable without a ladder. Modern gear runs warm, and heat is what kills it, so airflow and access get planned before anything is mounted. Placing it early also shortens the cable runs, which keeps labor down and keeps more of the budget in the rooms.

The failure mode we get called to fix is the opposite of a missing feature. It is a house with too many buttons, where a previous installer put ten scenes on a keypad and the family uses two, and the remaining eight make the keypad something you have to read. We start at about four scenes in a main room and add only what someone asks for after a few months. A keypad you have to read is a keypad that stops being used.

Voice is worth being honest about too. Josh.ai runs locally in the home rather than through a cloud service, which is why it is the one we install where voice control matters — it keeps working when the internet does not, and it is not listening to a data centre. It is a good third way into the system. It is a bad only way in, for the same reason an app is: a guest will not use it and a housekeeper will not learn it.
