Putting the smart-home devices on their own segment is not an upsell; it is the difference between a doorbell camera being invisible and a doorbell camera being the reason a call broke up. It also limits what a device with a weak password can reach.

Getting cable through a postwar house

These homes were built before anyone planned for a rack. Lath and plaster on the main level, drywall in the later additions, short interrupted framing runs, and closets that are smaller than the ones a modern house would give you. That is the practical constraint, and the answer is to plan the pull before cutting anything — closets, chases behind the stair and existing HVAC boots for the vertical, the basement ceiling for the horizontal.

The basement is the advantage. Open joist bays carry nearly all the horizontal cable in a network project, and the mechanical space gives the switch somewhere cool and central with room to reach it. That matters more than people expect: a switch in a hot, sealed cabinet has a shorter life than the same switch with air moving past it, and a switch nobody can reach is a switch nobody will ever service.

Where a run genuinely does not exist, we say so rather than promising a wire and delivering a repeater. Sometimes the right call is to open a ceiling; sometimes it is to accept good coverage in a far bedroom and put the money where the family actually is. That is a conversation on the walk, and the trade-off is real rather than rhetorical. Anything we do open gets patched by people who patch for a living.

The yard, and the neighbours

Outdoor coverage on a compact lot is a different problem from outdoor coverage on an estate. The distances are short, so one well-placed outdoor-rated access point under an eave usually covers the patio and the yard entirely — but the proximity means turning the power up is a bad answer, because it adds to the same congestion that is already the problem on this street. Placement and restraint do more here than output does.

Cameras follow the same logic. Aimed at your drive rather than the street, on wire, with recording on site rather than only in a cloud service. On lots this close together, framing matters as much as resolution: a camera that captures your own approach is useful, and a camera that captures the neighbour’s front door is a conversation nobody wants to have. We set the fields of view with you.

And if any hardscape or landscape work is planned, the network conduit belongs in it. Once a patio is set and the irrigation is in, adding a cable to a shed, a garage or a far corner becomes a demolition conversation rather than a trenching one. We would rather be consulted early and pull one conduit that goes unused than be called after the pavers are down.

Usually it is placement and interference, not the box. On lots this close together, neighbouring networks share the same channels, and a single router in the basement is asking a lot of plaster and ductwork. Security: smart devices tend to be the weakest passwords in a house, so keeping them off the segment where laptops and file storage live limits what a compromised one can reach. Can you cover the patio and the garage without bothering the neighbours?

Yes, and on a lot this size restraint is the right approach. One well-placed outdoor-rated access point under an eave usually covers the patio and the yard, at modest power, rather than turning everything up and adding to the congestion already on the street. A detached garage or shed is better served by its own cable and its own access point than by a signal pushed across the lawn.
