What a home networking project in Mission Hills involves

Two places fail in almost every house here: the third floor and the back of the lot. Both for the same reason. Plaster with wire lath in it, stone exterior walls, and old chimney and gravity-duct chases are far more hostile to a radio signal than the drywall and stick framing of a 1990s house, and the deep, heavily treed lots that make a Mission Hills property what it is put the yard well beyond anything an indoor access point can reach. Adding another wireless box near the dead spot is the fix that has usually already been tried, and it usually made the roaming worse.

So the work is routing. We survey the attic, the basement joist bays and the old chase runs, and we plan every drop on paper before anything is cut — the same discipline every other trade needs in this village. Attics and basements carry the horizontal; abandoned duct shafts, the space behind a stair and closets carry the vertical. Where a run genuinely cannot be made without opening something we cannot close cleanly, we say so and place the access point where the house will let us rather than where the plan wanted it.

Then placement against a real survey. An access point on cable, positioned for the coverage zone it serves, beats a mesh node repeating a signal in every measurable way — throughput, latency, and the roaming behaviour that decides whether a call survives the walk from the kitchen to the library. One network, one name, and a switch that lives where the service enters, sized to feed them. In a house of this era that switch also needs somewhere with air movement, because the closets these houses offer were not designed to carry heat.

The last piece is separation. Cameras, thermostats, shade motors, controllers and televisions do not need to share a lane with laptops, and in a large automated house there are a lot of them. Putting the smart devices on their own segment stops a chatty camera or a firmware download from degrading a video call, and it limits what a device with a weak password can reach. It is free to design in at the start and tedious to retrofit later.

  • Structured cabling. Category cable from a central panel to each access point and equipment position, routed through what the house already gives us rather than through new openings.
  • Ubiquiti access points. Wired, placed per coverage zone rather than per floor, and managed as one network with one name so devices hand off as people move.
  • Outdoor coverage. An outdoor-rated access point on cable, aimed at the terrace, the drive or the structure behind the garage. Deep treed lots defeat indoor radios entirely.

The lot is part of the network

Mature oaks and deep setbacks are the point of a Mission Hills property, and they are also why one router at one end of the house never reaches the third floor, the yard and whatever sits behind the garage. Trees are wet, and wet things absorb wireless signal remarkably well, so an outdoor design that looks fine on a plan in February stops working in June. We plan for the leafed-out condition rather than the bare one.

That means outdoor-rated access points on real cable, placed under an eave and aimed at where people actually are — the terrace, the drive, the pool if there is one — rather than a bonus radio pointed out a window. A carriage house or a structure behind the garage wants its own cable and its own access point, not a repeater chained across a lawn. Cameras follow the same rule: aimed at the drive rather than the street, on wire, with recording on site.

Timing matters if any landscape or hardscape work is planned. Once a terrace is set and the irrigation is in, adding a cable becomes a demolition conversation rather than a trenching one. If a project of that kind is anywhere in the plan, the network conduit belongs in it, and we would far rather be consulted early and pull one conduit that goes unused than be called after the stone is laid.

What we will not promise

A home network cannot make a slow internet service fast. If the line into the house is the constraint, better access points and a bigger switch will make the house behave predictably but will not add bandwidth, and we would rather say that on the walk than sell hardware against it. What a properly built network does fix is what people actually experience as slowness: a device that will not hold a connection, a call that dies crossing the house, a camera stream that stutters when someone streams a film.

We also will not force a run. In a house like this there are rooms where the honest answer is that a wire cannot be got there without opening something that will be visible afterwards, and the right call is sometimes to accept good coverage in that room rather than excellent coverage, and to put the money where the family actually is. That is a conversation on the walk, not a line on a specification sheet, and it is the conversation an installer who does not work in old houses tends to skip.

What we do commit to is documentation, which these houses almost never have. The panel is labelled, the runs are recorded, the configuration is written down — so whoever touches it next is not reverse-engineering a hundred-year-old building through three renovations. The workmanship warranty is five years, and the design center is a short drive down Mission Road, so a problem here is usually a same-week visit and often a remote fix first.

What we can honestly claim in Mission Hills

Honest about this one: we have completed a residence project in Mission Hills and a large lighting and climate system here — eighteen lighting zones and four HVAC zones on Lutron HomeWorks with Control4 — but no standalone network build in the village is on our published project list, so we are not going to describe one. The nearest comparable work is in Leawood: a Ubiquiti network install in one home and a network and surveillance build covering house and grounds in another. The village itself is a short drive from the design center on Glenwood Avenue, which is the practical part that matters for a network you will want supported.

Usually, and usually without a single mesh puck sitting on a shelf. Will more mesh nodes solve it?

Rarely, and often they make it worse. A mesh node repeats on the same air it is serving you with, so every hop costs throughput, and several similar radios give devices too many choices — the tablet clings to the wrong one and the call breaks crossing the hall. Access points on cable, on one network with one name, fix the handoff, which is the part people actually feel in a long or tall house.

Can you cover the terrace, the drive and the carriage house?

Yes, with cable rather than more wireless boxes — an outdoor-rated access point under an eave aimed at where people actually are, and a conduit run with its own access point for a structure behind the garage. Trees matter here: they are wet, they absorb signal, and a design that works in February can fail in June, so we plan for the leafed-out condition. If any landscape work is planned, the network conduit belongs in it.

Why should cameras and smart devices be on their own network?

Performance and security. A chatty camera or a firmware download should not be able to degrade a video call, and separating the lanes makes sure it cannot. Smart devices are also the weakest passwords in most houses, so keeping them off the segment where laptops and file storage live limits what a compromised one can reach. It costs nothing extra to design in at the start and is tedious to retrofit afterwards.

Where does the equipment go in a house with no spare closet?

Somewhere with real air movement, which is the constraint rather than space. Old houses hide racks in closets that were never designed to carry heat, and heat is what kills electronics. We choose the rack location, the ventilation and the service access together, and before the cable is pulled — because that decision sets every run length in the project. Sometimes the right answer is building a small ventilated enclosure rather than using an existing closet.
